Wyden, Blumenauer say private contractors play too powerful a role in spy agencies
By Jeff Mapes, The Oregonian
Sen. Ron Wyden and Rep. Earl Blumenauer told a Portland audience Friday that the U.S. intelligence network relies too heavily on hundreds of thousands of private contractors who have gained top security clearances.
At the City Club of Portland, the two Oregon Democrats said they have a strong opportunity to pare back the outsourcing of American spy functions following the uproar over the National Security Agency documents leaked by one of those contractors: Edward Snowden.
In addition, Wyden, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said after their appearance that the panel is close to releasing a report showing that contractors played a major role in the "interrogations and torture" of terrorism suspects.
When the report is declassified, Wyden added, "people are going to be struck by some of what happened when contractors were conducting interrogations and it will help our reform agenda."
