MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (WSVN) -- The first case of dengue fever, a mosquito-born disease, has been detected in Miami-Dade.
Friday evening, the Florida Health Department confirmed an 18-year-old living in the county contracted the fever. He has already made a recovery and will be ok.
The illness is transmitted by mosquitoes, which are obviously common in South Florida, especially this time of year. If unrecognized and left untreated, the disease can be deadly.
Health officials are informing citizens on ways to take precautions to avoid catching the fever. "As long as the mosquito is present, we are at risk of having more cases of dengue," Doctor Alvaro Mejia-Echeverry of the Health Department said.

(6,568 posts)I think the modifier "South" is unnecessary. I live in Central FL, and the mosquitos have been out in droves. I help keep the population down around my house (by keeping NOTHING outside that retains standing water), but as I sit here in my recording studio (aka, my garage), with the door open, I've been bitten once or twice. A couple weeks ago while recording the band, we were eaten alive. My garage has no AC, so we record in the sweltering hell that FL is in the summer. We open the doors and kick on about 3 fans during breaks. Mosquitos ALL over when that happens.
