Boehner, Cantor declined invitation to speak at MLK event

The House’s two most senior Republicans, Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Va.), turned down invitations to speak at the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

Boehner opted to speak at a separate congressional ceremony commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.’s delivery of the “I Have a Dream” speech on Capitol Hill, Roll Call reported, rather than at Wednesday’s event on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Cantor was asked to participate in the event, which featured speeches from President Obama and former Presidents Clinton and Jimmy Carter, just 12 days ago. The majority leader was traveling in North Dakota and Ohio on Wednesday and declined the invitation.

Cantor’s decision is notable because he traveled to Selma, Ala., with Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) earlier this year and has stated his commitment to passing a rewrite of the Voting Rights Act in the 113th Congress.

<...>

“What’s really telling, I think, is the podium behind me — just count at the end of the day how many Republicans will be there,” Bond said on MSNBC. “They asked a long list of Republicans to come, and to a man and woman they said ‘no.’ And that they would turn their backs on this event was telling of them, and the fact that they seem to want to get black votes, they’re not gonna get 'em this way.”

the name Johnson looks a lot like the name Johnson. No matter how you spell it.

the state I'm currently existing in is Floriduh where our gov seems to think that is a misspelling of both names.

We know they don't care so why even bother. They dont care about AAs or diversity at all. Their entire base is angry white men, religious zealots, gun "enthusiasts" & the greedy with much overlap.

They prove once again that they are a party whose time has past.

such a beautiful magnificent anniversary.

But, I've read the gops want to claim MLK as their own so why then didn't they even bother to show up at the 50th Anniversary of his "I Have a Dream Speech"? Make up their damn minds.

The gop-teabaggers don't want the Black, Latino, and Women's vote.. they want to suppress it.

Of just how racist the modern republican party has become?

Republicanism is now a genuine threat to the constitutional rights of all Americans.

what would you expect them to say if they did show up?

Could they talk about Lincoln? Without seeming to take away from Martin? Could they talk about the voting rights act which had more Republican votes than Democratic votes? Could they talk about Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell and Condaleeza Rice? Realistically, what would you expect them to say?

They affirmed their party is the party of the racists, by the racists, for the racists.
