It kept raining off and on...strangely enough by the time President Obama came up to speak..the rain stopped...as if on cue..

G.H.W. Bush has been very ill so he couldn't go to the event.
And G.W. Bush said he wanted to stay close by to his father, so he declined the invite.

Also, John Boehner and Eric Cantor were invited but they didn't go.

I understand GHW not attending.

As to the rest? Their absence speaks volumes. VOLUMES -- like turn it up to eleven volumes.

(Yes, it was a Spinal Tap reference. )

Beautiful pictures. It shows the respect these men hold for this solemn occasion. It shows dignity and integrity.

Thanks for negating the OP that tried to ridicule this beautiful day and belittle their achievements.

Beautiful pictures. I watched the entire thing today and teared up more than once. Rep. Lewis--wow, goosebumps on top of goosebumps. So many great speeches.

DU was consumed with hate and couldn't be bothered with one thread to commemorate such a memorable/historical event. 65 threads on Syria saying pretty much the same thing, that's where DU was today.

Calling Obama a war criminal that's what DU was today. Calling anyone that didn't completely agree with the scientific polls conducted on DU, war perverts, Bush supporters etc. that's what DU was today.

What historic event? On a Democratic site no less. I think I'm getting close to the end of my ride with DU. This isn't what I signed up for.

Thanks for the great pictures. My dad marched in 1963. Today meant something to some of us.

I don't know if you've seen this link but it's ..

"Let Freedom Ring: The Day in Images" And, they're compelling!

Sandy Redman of Pine Top, N.C., cries as she listen to President Obama speak at the Lincoln Memorial

There's so much more..

yet my computer keeps freezing up on me.

It's sort of like some of the negativity that we see here, so many seem to be frozen in a place and time and refuse to move forward. They do not wish to embrace a future, they want to cling to the past.

One_voice, you have been here far longer than I have. I hear your pain. As one_voice we can move forward, there are many here that believe as you do.

Your dad stood for us when he marched in 1963. We can also Stand Together.

I went to listen to the President.

If what you say is true then it's a rather sad indictment of DU. I can't imagine even the toughest critics of the President not appreciating what happened this afternoon.

Sometimes it's ok to breathe. Today was one of those days.

I was born in 67. This was my chance to stand beside my brothers and sisters.

There *has* to be at least 65 threads on any given topic (whatever the outrage du jour is) because one absolutely MUST put their self-righteous indignation on display regularly to be a "winner" on DU.

A mere comment in an already established thread doesn't cut it my friend. No, one must be absolutely certain that the right people read those displays of self-righteous indignation. How else can you win friends and influence people??

Besides, if you start your own thread that correctly mirrors all the other self-righteous, indignant people they can all take turns rec'ing each other's rants and adding lots of replies and the really important "monster thread" status is achieved and then Voila! You're somebody!!

I admit I often envy these folks. Here I am struggling to make rent, hoping to buy groceries and what not and, to these folks, the big concern is winning acceptance (you like me, you really like me!1!) here at DU.

But don't you ever forget, they're the REAL liberals and they are mostly concerned with justice and equality or whatever.
