That's correct two Presidents were absent today in Washington to commemorate ML King's infamous march 50 years ago. I am sure those supporters of the Bush family have a lovely reason for their absence. Granted, HW Bush is probably too frail but he could have sent one of his healthy sons, then again there probably aren't any MLK supporters from the Lone Star State. Just an observation.

(8,155 posts)To be clear, I'm talking to the OP and not about the Bush family. There are probably millions of progressives in Texas; more than whole populations of other states.

(36,974 posts)2008
Obama: 3,528,633 (43.68%)
McCain: 4,479,328 (55.45%)
2012
Obama: 3,308,124 (41.38%)
Romney: 4,569,843 (57.17%)
The total 'number' of Texans that voted for Obama is more than that of the total number of Democrats in a bunch of the 'blue' states.
Edited to add...
Only California, New York, and Florida had more Democrats than Texas. Texas came in FOURTH in both 2008 and 2012.

(36,974 posts)As far as the Bush family. G.H.W. Bush is too ill to travel and W declined the invitation to speak due to wanting to stay near his father.
Now the two that folks should be griping about is John Boehner and Eric Cantor - they were invited and did not go.
Btw...
Over 3.5 MILLION Texans in 2008 voted for Obama
and almost that many in 2012.

That single claim has brought this entire OP down. It's a total insult to what are likely millions of Texas progressives.

When we only hear about people like Louis Gohmert and Rick Perry, Texas appears to have a shortage of progressives. When you look further, that's not the case. It's the same with a lot of states, North Carolina, Louisiana, Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan. Hopefully, it will get turned around, at least partly, in 2014.

(2,673 posts)I live in Dallas and this city is blue. Several elections back, we turned EVERY Republican judge out of office in our county. All the major cities in Texas - Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, El Paso and the Rio Grand Valley are solid Democratic areas. Just because you see Louie Gohmert and Ted Cruz in the news does not mean all Texans right wing and stupid like that. It means that reporters are lazy and pick the low hanging fruit to report on.

(36,974 posts)... As in past elections, President Obama and the Democrats won in major metropolitan areas such as Austin, El Paso, Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston, but Republicans were able to overwhelm the urban vote by sweeping the vast rural areas and suburbs of Texas by large margins. ....

In 2008 the only huge city/county that McCain won was Ft.Worth/Tarrant.
In 2012 the only huge city/county that Romney won was Ft.Worth/Tarrant.

(17,493 posts)Following surgery, Bush declines invitation to MLK event anniversary
By Mario Trujillo - 08/28/13 12:35 PM ET
Former President George W. Bush declined an invitation to speak on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington because he is recovering from surgery, an aide said.
***snip***
Bush underwent unexpected heart surgery earlier this month to open a blocked artery. Doctors found the blockage during a routine checkup and implanted a stent to relieve it.
