Maine Town Official Visited By Secret Service For Racially Charged Obama Post
A town official in Maine was visited by the Secret Service Tuesday after posting a message to Facebook referring to President Barack Obama with a racial slur and calling for him to be shot, the Portland Press Herald reported.
David Marsters, a retired Massachusetts police officer and a candidate for selectman in Sabattus, Maine, posted a photo of Obama along with a link to a story about a Republican push to impeach the president at 8:17 p.m. Friday, writing "Shoot the N****" above it, according to the newspaper.
Marsters told the Press Herald that after his Facebook post was flagged to local law enforcement by other residents, he was visited by both the Secret Service and the CIA. He said he told the Secret Service agents who questioned him that he didn't intend to threaten the president.
Marsters told the Press Herald in a telephone interview that his post was taken out of context.

Mark Duquette, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, called a special meeting for Thursday night to consider removing David Marsters from the several town committees on which he serves. Marsters' status is the only item on the meeting agenda.
"I felt it's my responsibility, as swiftly as possible, to make it clear the radical views of Mr. Marsters are not the views of the Board of Selectmen, of the town or of anyone I know in Sabattus," Duquette said.

but, he's still running for selectman:
Marsters, 68, has taken out nomination papers to run for selectman, and said Tuesday that he plans to continue his election effort. Nominations papers are due Sept. 23.

No mention of the threat of violence in the headline.

As bad as it is to be racist, why would TPM use the non-criminal accusation in the headline? It suggests the government is harassing people not guilty of a crime. Especially, when the real reason for the visit was the threat of violence against the president.

(31,810 posts)But I suspect they are playing to people who think its okay to refer to the President as a n*gger and creating a divide of public opinion based on that. They want them to focusing that word - as opposed to his call to murder the President in cold blood.

(31,810 posts)The town official is responding to this. IE We are better than this, this is not who we are, and you can't represent us.

(1,113 posts)You know, I've had this long standing feeling that the US is falling apart. Ever since our President was first elected it seems that the racist speech of some citizens is seen as acceptable by some. And to threaten the life of our President is free speech. I am really concerned, not just about this idiot in Maine, but about all the idiots that are doing it. This isn't a joke.
