Contributor newspaper down to final issue unless donors step up

The Contributor, Nashville’s street newspaper that allows the city’s homeless to earn an income, is on the verge of shutting down unless it gets significant help from private donors in just a short time.

“We realized with a bit of terror three weeks ago that we only had about six weeks of operating expenses left, and that we were in a time of really needing to step up and ask for help,” said Tasha French Lemley, executive director of The Contributor.

After launching as a non-profit six years ago, enabling homeless or former homeless people to sell papers on street corners across town, The Contributor might not publish a final issue beyond September.

That news was relayed to many the paper’s some 400 street vendors on Wednesday afternoon as they picked up the latest newspapers to sell. Its top headline: “FINAL ISSUE?”

In an impromptu fashion, many vendors responded by emptying change from their own pockets to help the cause.

I hope they can keep going. Those vendors are trying hard to get back on their feet. Skeeter Barnes Aug 2013 #1

It may not be a panacea for the homeless, but even a stonehearted conservative would have to admit that they are not lazy.

oops. On edit: reply to Skeeter Barnes above.
