earlier tonight I was on http://newspapermap.com/ and zeroed right in on it to find some news outlets.

And have been spending a ton of time on google maps researching the whole area for some time (partially relating to some old books I am reading - and it helps to have old maps handy as well when reading old travel diaries in the region. Amazing how the world has changed there since the early 1800's and yet some things have not). One such book (free online, old and out of copyright)

The inner life of Syria, Palestine, and the Holy land : from my private journal (1875)

Off by 22 miles. If the map let me zoom in more I think I would've been closer, couldn't tell city from desert, heh.

is something I would love to do.

Founded in the 3rd millennium B.C., Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the Middle East. In the Middle Ages, it was the centre of a flourishing craft industry, specializing in swords and lace. The city has some 125 monuments from different periods of its history – one of the most spectacular is the 8th-century Great Mosque of the Umayyads, built on the site of an Assyrian sanctuary.

But then I have a leg up on most Americans - I actually know where Syria is, so that really helps.
