5. Phishing attempt.

Feb 2012

Any time you are addressed as "Dear Citiclient ", "Dear Valued Customer" or any variation thereof, it's phony. Even if you have a Citi account, any email from them will address you by NAME-they know it. If ever there is any doubt, just log on your account the normal way, if there was a real message from them it will show on your account page.

Banks don't do that. A real live person will actually call you if there's anything fishy going on. They're always telling clients that they do not email their customers asking for anything from them. The only thing you should be getting from your bank is an online statement if you've opted for one.

Otherwise they call you or send a letter.

16. That's a fact. Barclay's called me yesterday because of two "suspicious" $1 charges on my Visa card.

We went over several transactions. It appears the two one-dollar items were the only ones that were not legitimate, but I had them close the account anyway per their recommendation.

Shut your browser completly down and open a new one so they can't "follow you"

Never respond to something like that. Using a new browser, go to your bank. and check for messages. Or call them.

to the banks they're spoofing. There's usually an email address like abuse@bigbank.com, or someone at the bank can tell you how. They hate this stuff at least as much as we do-- it costs them millions.

(You have to make sure that the full headers are in the forwarded email if they want to try to track it.)
