Hopefully, I'll manage to make it (a) while I'm still somewhat ambulatory, and (b) before the attendance costs make it impossible.

Until then, I'll watch the streaming video tomorrow. Thanks.

Tickets, travel and time off from work and this is already a $2000+ event just to *be* there.

That doesn't account for transportation, food, water, supplies, etc.

Easily a $3000+ week-long trip.

This has become an event for individuals with deep pockets.

Oh, well. I imagine it'll ultimately remain on the list, along with dating Morgan Fairchild or Cheryl Teigs.

But there's always Slab City!

I used to live in that general region. Those beautiful landscapes are fragile and recover only slowly. The amphitheater-shaped scar, from the roads and parking places of the "city," will probably be visible for centuries

the BLM started requiring burn blankets and such

You may think nothing grows there, but in fact there are little plants that sometimes do: years can pass without rain there, and when it does rain, ephemeral runs like the Quinn seem to disappear quickly into the sediment but actually may water the subsurface for some miles, even if there's no surface water, so some volunteers can spring from the cracks

Bring 50K people onto the alkali crust and have them tromp around for a week: they pulverize it into a fine dust that blows around, and nobody's sure what the long-term effects of that will be on local ecology

Look at some photos and you'll see that the city traces are still visible in later years. The individual alleys may disappear, but the gross outlines of the activity are likely to persist for a long time

it's an interesting cultural phenom. A celebration of imagination and spirit in a world that is ever more rigid and hostile. I understand the cynicism about it --but the pagans did have something that perhaps we have lost.

When I was watching they were just describing it but I didn't see anything significant. Could see bursts of light to the right of the screen but that's it.

I just tuned in (2:00 AM PDT). It looks like an airport at night, what with all the people and Mutant Vehicles milling about.

Actually, it reminded me of "The Day the Earth Stood Still", with Gort standing there waiting to vaporize a few revelers just for the hell of it.

That, and a week of sand getting into every crack, crevice, and pore of every animal, vegetable, and machine probably sets up a good scenario for a few malfunctions here and there.

A couple of years ago, I believe the Man himself suffered a severe case of premature immolation and burnt up a couple days before schedule.

God, this sounds like fun! I wanna go!
