Nothing gets in the way of the Republican House avoiding work. Not even voting on military action in Syria.
House leaders issued a statement saying that serious, substantive questions were being raised regarding Syria and they are so glad that the President is asking them to vote because this is so important, constitution, blah blah oh, and they are going to take the measure up on September 9th, which is another way of saying they are not coming back early from vacaction for this serious, substantive matter.
Can you imagine if Democrats had told Bush theyd get back to him on Iraq when they were done with vacation?

(23,367 posts)There is no need to rush this. Provided that the administration holds its fire, there is no national security crisis.
why should they come back at all ? They never get ANYTHING done in any case .

That would be my suggestion if the GOP's uncooperative - use his Constitutional power to summon them.

This GOCRAP Congress has been ducking real responsibility ever since January 2009 -- and they are still trying to duck it. The whole world is watching -- pretty embarrassing for those of us still capable of it -- the question is: are their constituents in the US watching, and realizing just who they have representing them.

In the end Obama will have to decide if he wants peace or war.

(50,546 posts)If whoever did the gas attacks does another one while Congress is still on vacation, the Republicans will be on every talk show they can find, from the national Sunday gabfests down to a local TV station's "issues" program, screaming about how Obama is to blame for this because He Could Have Stopped This By Bombing The Weapons Depot and He Didn't. Impeachment hearings will follow.
Remember the little cartoon about the little Republican elephant breaking a vase then blaming it on the little Democratic donkey? It'll be like that.

(25,183 posts)It gives us more of a chance to get persuadable Democratic congresscritters to vote against the war. Not that I credit the Repukes with anything, but under that broken-clock-is-right-twice-a-day theory, and the Rethugs inability to do anything coordinated, this has to be something that they screwed up for our benefit.
If you're for the bombing, then this gives the President a longer time to make his case. Or watch it fall apart.
