When did Labor Day become a celebration of the Armed Forces, local pol's, and local businesses?

I watched the parade today, and while it was fun, there really didn't seem to be any reference to workers. There were quite a few small businesses with cars/floats and a couple of businesses which had their employees as marchers, but there again was no reference to America's labor force. Am I missing something?

You do support the troops, don't you, my friend? I don't know what we might do with people who don't support the troops.

Who suggested dumping Labor Day in favor of a holiday celebrating business.

We played for a festival in the center of the city yesterday. I bet if you stopped 20 adults n that crowd and asked them what this holiday is and why we have it, only 2 or 3 wold have a coherent answer remotely connected to the facts. And if you asked them why they have ANY holidays, why most of them get weekends off, and why there is overtime past 40 yours, I best you would get blank stares from at least 75% of them.

But they know where the sno-cone machine is.

around the time that Memorial (Decoration) Day became a second Veterans Day.

Hint- If you are alive, Memorial Day is not about you.

Memorial Day. At that time it was run by WWI and WWII veterans. This was the mid to late 70's.

Even things like Christmas and Thanksgiving.

But, unlike Labor Day, all those other holidays do retain a semblance of their original purpose. But Labor Day does not. tIt simply marks the end of summer and nobody dares to mention unions. Not in any news outlet I've seen today.

it was another reason for a mattress sale, even bigger than the 4th of July one.
