Lots of people who could be helped by unions are anti-union.

I thought to myself, you know, maybe they're right.

Maybe some employers just decided to give employees a living wage because it seemed like a nice thing to do.
Maybe they gave them benes such as leave time and group insurance because they felt like the workers deserved these things.

Needless to say, to all the above, big time.

once I was in a union and someone who didn't deserve it got protected by the union so they are evil and bad! And I had to pay them money.

1). Corporate apologists have been extremely successful at dissemmentating their anti-union propaganda.

2) Unions have shot themselves in the foot by not seeing the big picture. Unions must be interested not just in short term gains for their membership, but the long term sustainable viability of the industries their membership works in. In other words, they need to focus on things like training, and career transition, rather than maintaining the status quo.

I hear occasionally that teachers and government sector unions are already quite active trying to unionize other workers, but I have to admit, I'm not seeing it. We need to be talking about unions not just for fast-food workers and grocery store workers, but everybody - even white-collar professionals.

... Paper mills, mostly. Of course there were civil servants as well (teachers, cops, firemen, postmen, utility workers etc) ... and the city did ok. So it boggles me now to talk to people I went thru elem & high school with, who despise unions. The very same unions that made sure their fathers & uncles had decent wages & provided income for a home and food and school clothes and in alot of cases, family vacations and intramural sports leagues for all ages.

WTF, America?
