Tornado Rips though eastern Japan, injuring dozens

KOSHIGAYA —

Several dozen people were injured when a tornado ripped through parts of eastern Japan on Monday, tearing off roofs and uprooting buildings.

Footage on public broadcaster NHK showed a number of homes destroyed, upturned cars, schools with shattered windows and a warehouse that had been lifted from its foundations and hurled into other buildings in Koshigaya, north of Tokyo.

An AFP journalist in the city saw roof tiles scattered all over the streets, with locals outside inspecting their battered homes and emergency vehicles at the scene.

Residents were being prevented from re-entering their houses for fear of collapse.

Some electricity poles had been snapped and a number of them had hit houses as they fell, worsening the damage.

But at least it looks like there were no fatalities.

I hope the injured all get better and that Koshigaya is able to rebuild quickly.

unstable from storms moving through. F1, and good at damaging mobile homes and flinging garden sheds about.

They are rare but not unheard of, especially in this part of Japan (northern Tokyo Metro Area). The Tsukuba tornado was actually part of a 3-tornado cell (2 other concurrent tornadoes in nearby areas), but most of the damage occurred in Tsukuba.

"According to the Japan Meterological Agency, over the past 5 years Japan has averaged 23 tornadoes a year. That's probably higher than what one might expect. Tornadoes can occur anywhere in Japan, but especially along coastal areas. They can occur in any season, in conjunction with typhoons, cold fronts, low pressure systems, and so on. The largest number occur during the typhoon season of September and October."

They occur less often outside the US, but they do occur.
