There was a time when Leo Grillo believed he could get people near the deserts of Southern California to stop dumping their dogs and cats there. But he was wrong. Even after saving his first abandoned, starving Doberman-Labrador mix, Delta, in the Angeles National Forest nearly 35 years ago, any time he would travel along that highway he'd find more abandoned animals. "It sucks the life out of me. It's very, very painful," he said.
Grillo made a promise to do whatever it took to restore the animals he found to health and happiness. So he started the DELTA Rescue Dedication & Everlasting Love for Animals which today is home to about 1,500 cats, dogs and horses, on 115 acres, and employs 50 people, including a full-time veterinarian. DELTA, which was named a top-ranked charity by CharityWatch, is now the largest no-kill, care-for-life sanctuary in the country. Since the beginning, Grillo has funded it through his ability to craft compelling direct mail letters, but he told The Washington Post that DELTA will be finally joining the 21st century with e-fundraising. (1,113 posts)But there are so many good rescue groups because there are so many animals that need rescue. I wish the need wasn't so great.

He has a good heart. But some of those animals needed the gift of euthanasia and didn't get it.

(3,179 posts)I can't imagine being capable of condemning an innocent creature, who depends on you, to such a terror filled and painful experience. Only the most rotten people would do such thing.
