President Barack Obama has a Syria problem, and its not with Republicans or Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California isnt sure that a majority of her fellow House Democrats will vote to authorize a U.S. airstrike on the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in retaliation for his alleged use of chemical weapons in an attack on Syrians last month.
I dont know, the House minority leader told Time magazine when asked if she could get a majority of her caucus to vote for a resolution. Pelosi herself backs military action against the Syrian regime. But her uncertainty about Democrats is reflected in an estimate that the Washington Post has going, here.
Right now the count shows undecided as the biggest category, with 102 representatives mostly Democrats. Of the 86 against military action, 23 are Democrats. Of the 93 leaning no, Democrats total 27.
Lawmakers return to Washington on Monday and more arm-twisting by Obama is a certainty. Obama would need 217 yes votes in the House, where Democrats currently hold 200 seats and Republicans control 233. There are two vacancies.
