PBS on line has the big three of Shakespeare's tragedies

Last edited Fri Sep 6, 2013, 04:06 AM - Edit history (1)

Hamlet, with David Tennant (Dr.Who)

King Lear, With Ian McKellen as the mad king

And last but certainly least, The Scottish Play with Patrick Stewart as MacBeth.

The link I forgot to add...

Speaking of The Scottish Play, there was a cute movie, Me and Orson Welles, with Zach Efron as the Me...

So far the To be or Not to Be soliloquy is by far the best scene with the Three Sisters right behind.

The Cleveland Playhouse company have refurbished 7 theaters and there isn't a night when there isn't interesting stuff being performed.

In HS I took an experimental Shakespeare course in place of English Lit, and it was great! We did some field trips to plays, plus another teacher took us to the Shakespeare Festival in San Diego.

One guy in our class was a talented cartoonist, and he storybooked R&J/West Side Story brilliantly. I'll always remember that classmate for that.

Around that time our community also got a new "theater-in-the-round" venue. I became a volunteer usher there to see the plays, and while the Shakespeare was good, my favorite there was 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum' with Mickey Rooney.

I saw the 40th anniversary presentation of the film at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood with cast and production people doing a Q&A afterward. The film was remastered specifically for that occasion. Marnie Nixon? Oh yeah!

Ten years later there was a nationwide, one-time theatrical showing for the 50th anniversary. It fell on my birthday, so seeing it at our local theater was my present. Best present ever!

Did you know that the BBC did a similar series in 1960, called An Age of Kings, which featured a very young, pre-James Bond Sean Connery, as Hotspur? It is now available on DVD.
