Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace

President Obama waxed poetic on the virtues of airstrikes on Syria today during the G20 summit in St. Petersberg Russia. His answers at the press conference about his rationale for bombing a sovereign nation that had taken no provocative action toward us were eloquent, if perplexing.
The president seemed to sense the hesitancy of the American people to approve a n attack on Syria, given the similarity to the Bush Crime Familys justification of the attack on Iraq (use of chemical weapons among them) based on Colin Powells trumped-up presentation to he UNSC:
This is not something we fabricated. This is not something that we are using as an excuse for military action. As I said last night, I was elected to end wars, not start them. Ive spent the last four and a half years doing everything I can to reduce our reliance on military power as a means of meeting our international obligations and protecting the American people.
Really? Two words; drone strikes. Are those ending the war? Do you think hell have to return his Nobel Peace Prize, Truthseekers, if the Syrian attack proceeds?
Later, the President sounded alarmingly Rummyesque in his description of the kind of attack he is planning on Syria:
Our response, based on discussions with our military, is that we can have a response that is limited, is proportional
but that is meaningful
and serves as a strong deterrent. Adding Is it possible that Assad doubles down and
uses chemical weapons more widely? I suppose anything is possible, but it wouldnt be wise.
All were missing is a reference to known knowns and a laser pointer and we could be back at any DoD briefing, circa 2003. Who can forget all the bat squeeze uttered by Rumsfeld and his minions about the limited, focused, brief strike on Iraq? Remember his prediction that the military involvement would last days, perhaps weeks, but not months? That we would be welcomed by the grateful Iraqi people for liberating them?
Are we ready to travel this road again?

President Obama and President Putin are together today at the first day of the G20 summit in in St. Petersberg, Russia. The Presidents imminent airstrikes on Syria are proving to be a sticky point with the other world leaders, as Reuters reports:
U.S. President Barack Obama faced growing pressure from world leaders not to launch military strikes in Syria on Thursday at a summit on the global economy that was eclipsed by the conflict.
The Group of 20 (G20) developed and developing economies met in St. Petersburg to try forge a united front on economic growth, trade, banking transparency and fighting tax evasion.
But the club that accounts for two thirds of the worlds population and 90 percent of its output is divided over issues ranging from the U.S. Federal Reserves decision to end its program of stimulus for the economy to the civil war in Syria.
Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to use the meeting in a seafront tsarist palace to talk Obama out of military action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over a chemical weapons attack which Washington blames on government forces.
Obama wore a stiff smile as he approached Putin on arrival at the summit and grasped his hand. Putin also maintained a businesslike expression. It was only when they turned to pose for the cameras that Obama broke into a broader grin.
The first round at the summit went to Putin as China, the European Union and Pope Francis in a letter for G20 leaders aligned themselves more closely with him than with Obama over the possibility and legitimacy of armed intervention.
Military action would have a negative impact on the global economy, especially on the oil price it will cause a hike in the oil price, Chinese Vice Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao told a briefing.
The Pope urged the leaders to lay aside the futile pursuit of a military solution. He has also invited the 1.2 billion Roman Catholics and people of other faiths to join him in a day of prayer and fasting on Saturday to end the civil war.
European Union leaders, usually strong allies of the United States, described the August 21 attack near Damascus, which killed an estimated 1,400 people, as abhorrent but added: There is no military solution to the Syrian conflict.
Putin, Assads most important ally, was isolated on Syria at a Group of Eight meeting in June, the last big meeting of world powers. He could now turn the tables on Obama, who recently likened him to a bored kid in the back of the classroom.
Only France, which is preparing to join U.S. military action, rallied behind Obama.
Hey, maybe Obama will run into Snowden while hes in town. If he captured him that might increase his poll numbers!
