Some 21.6 percent of children lived in food insecure households, with about half of them experiencing food insecurity themselves.
The share of households with seniors who are food insecure appears to be trending upward, rising from 7.5 percent in 2009 to 8.8 percent in 2012.

Bernie Sanders: Billions for 'Another War,' but No Money for Needs at Home
Weve cut back on education, weve cut back on nutrition programs, weve thrown kids off Head Start, says Sanders. We have billions to spend on a war but no money to take care of the very pressing needs of the American people. That bothers me a lot.

(6,960 posts)Bothers me, too. BHO wimps out on everything progressive, but is fighting tooth and nails for this. The people are sending him a clear message and I hope Bernie and others in Congress nix this forthwith!

(23,671 posts)And after two solid years of excuses about deficits and debt leading to cuts in various programs that help the poor, while watching the 1% heralding a "recovery" because they've never had it so good, its rather stupid of the WH to think that the average voter would support yet another money wasting adventure by the MIC.

(10,611 posts)It is CONGRESS' job to pass legislation. Clearly we have a GOP bent on stopping or rolling back progress.
The President is well aware of this. What you will never see covered by the biased MSM are all the local stops he makes to lobby the American people directly about these issues and the importance of getting out to vote.
The sight of the President going theatrically bombastic at GOP obstruction might be cathartic theater for some, but will not spur action, and would be spun the most negative way possible by the MSM.
In short, you just won't have the full view of what's going on if you rely on the mainstream or cable news outlets to inform you.

(28,552 posts).. the god damned excuses. We see now what Obama will fight for, and it is not for the struggling American. No amount of "he's not king" or "you don't know the whole story" will make up for clear and unambiguous action.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME OBAMA HAS GONE TO THE MAT FOR ANYTHING AT ALL, period. All you need to know.

Maybe it is also the absence of what he says about the hungry in this country.
Do you know who said
Weve cut back on education, weve cut back on nutrition programs, weve thrown kids off Head Start, ... We have billions to spend on a war but no money to take care of the very pressing needs of the American people. That bothers me a lot.
It wasn't Obama.
He's willing to fight for another optional war. That's something that he takes seriously. He's willing to squander billions for more war. He's willing to disregard the views of Democrats who don't want another optional war. Maybe you are not outraged, but it is outrageous that our own citizens including children are going hungry while there is no limit on the amount to be spent for bombing in the Middle-East. He's not outraged. He's as happy as a celebrity.
You indicate that "It's all the Republicans' fault." If he can't handle the job, he shouldn't have run for office. If it is "all the Republicans' fault," you shouldn't expect all of us to be cheerleaders for him.

(62,325 posts)They can expect huge backlash from this now that we know there is plenty of money around and they were lying when they told us there would be a need for cuts due to that lack of money.
Now we know. So I hope they don't dare try to convince anyone that there is no money. That won't go over very well not that it ever did to begin with. We KNEW there would always be lots of money for their war games, but now we know for sure.

The basing of the F-35 in South Burlington, VT will render about 4,000 homes "incompatible with residential use" per the Air Force Draft Environmental Impact Statement. If the F-35 is based in VT, the impact will disproportionately affect poor and immigrant communities in Vermont.
Bernie has really disappointed me on this issue. www.stopthef35.com

(20,226 posts)lot of money and high paying jobs -- very few politicians don't want that in their districts or states. Where I live there is talk of opening a new military base on the neighboring island - ideologically - I would have problems with it - but there is little doubt that it would give a big boost to the depressed local economy

(4,651 posts)I never quite understood how the Iraq war was waged but the expenses weren't a part of the budget, in fact weren't added until the Obama administration. Can someone enlighten me on this...?
