I really hope everyone reads this and recs this.

Too many posters have seemed to forgotten that there is another person that they are arguing with. A person who means well and just wants what is best for our country.

Even to those of you who disagree with with me

It should not only be about Syria. It should be a point that all should encompass about DU in general. The old timers/ master posters need to understand that their view is not the only view. They do not accept, they act like little bitches when someone disagrees with them, and completely try to default any ORIGINAL thought that is not their own. They use the "report comment" as a way to get things thrown out that do not concur with their closed mindedness. I have actually been a jury member on many of these and each time, the post was left to stand. It is almost as if the elder statesman here at DU have turned into the crotchety old assholes we call the GOP.

I see no point in allowing hostilities to escalate and run rampant.
Everyone has their POV and some minds will never be changed.

I have been coming here daily for 12 years but have found that I am decreasing my visits due to the nastiness.

It is poisonous. I have been sucked into the nasty fights at times and feel awful. It just isn't helpful or right.

I appreciate people with strong feelings about things but it is too easy for us to sit behind our keyboard and snip at one another.

.
.
.

I agree about the increasing nastiness - in SOME forums/groups.

Remember, there are over 200,000 members here

Most know that GD can be the most vicious, as do I.

I do not "live" in any one forum/group.

spread myself around from energy/gardening/humor groups and so on,

a wee bit of time in GD, and a fair bit in the Lounge.

I'd like to be able to make a positive difference, both here and out in the World.

Too old to expect to be able to do a whole lot, but if I can do a wee bit,

I'll do it. I have a self-rule thing about participation here on DU.

ONE - I do not engage in extended disputes with another poster,

regardless how right I think I am - 2-3 responses, if still met with insults or degradation,

I just stop responding.

TWO - I do not use the ignore feature on DU - if someone pisses me off enough,

I put them on what I call "Brain Ignore". Just won't respond.

I want to see what even the nasty/ignorant people have to say.

Closing my eyes don't work - and sometimes even the nastiest can come up with a link/snippet of information that is useful.

I pay attention, -

OH

Curious about your username - Stuckinthebush

I just bought 28 acres at the very end of a dead end road in Northern Ontario.

Not "stuck" here - yet - my first Winter is soon approaching.

I could be stuck - last mile is a non-maintained road - no snowplows, no sanders.

I think I'm ready - 2 years supply of firewood, a years supply of propane,

a back-up generator for when(not if) the power goes out

3 months or more worth of food -

and so on.

Keep in touch Stuckinthebush - I be curious.

Absolutely it is my fault when I do get sucked in. I have tried to walk away from the fights and have succeeded as of late.

I think your list is fabulous. We all need to take heed of your advice and be more careful with our words/posts.

As for Stuckinthebush - I came here in 2001 a month after DU opened. I remember Jesse Jackson imploring us during the 2000 election to "Stay out of the Bushes". I used that statement and made a user name because I knew we would be stuck in the Bushes for at least four years (turned out to be 8). When we had the name change opportunity I didn't really want to change because it became part of my internet identity. So, I kept it.

I'd love to visit northern Ontario in the summer. Winter seems like a scary time! Of course, I'm from Alabama and summer seems like a scary time down here for many.

Peace and thanks for the advice.
