I saw the one Rose did back in 2009 or 2010 and Assad was able to make a very good impression.

It would be interesting to see his body language and his voice when he says that.

What I question is - if he did not use gas, someone did - and reacted by bombing the area ferociously for the next 4 days. I admit that it is different as they are in a civil war, but it seems to be a strange reaction to a part of your country being devastated. It also seems strange thathe used Hezzbollah to attack one of his own cities to win it back.

Likely he offered - it is a good get for him and is useful for the US - and Assad thought it useful for him. Remember to be as suspicious of him as people here are of their own President.
