How can Mitt have won Detroit, somewhere he should have lost hard?

(5,169 posts)I voted for the lesser of 4 evil because no matter what everyone says there is no such thing as a mortal lock in a presidential election.

(4,667 posts)In addition....
1) This is Romney's home state. A month ago this race wasn't even suppose to be competitive.
2) Romney is facing the weakest field perhaps in GOP primary history. He is having a dogfight with Rick Santorum? Seriously?
3) Romney has absurd money and organization benefits over his rivals. Remember, the Santorum campaign is so bad, they aren't even on the ballot in Virginia! Yet still his home state is this much of a struggle?
4) It looks like turnout for the Michigan primary will be down. This continues the lack of enthusiasm trend for the GOP. That's a bad sign for the GOP in November
5) Michigan will not be in play in November. Obama is up big.
I hope you feel better now.

(5,944 posts)The majority of voters live outside of Detroit. Cities like Livonia, Plymouth, Northville, etc have very affluent populations.

It's in the rural areas that the teabaggers live.

(7,968 posts)for Romney. He's the nominee I think and I actually I'm not sure that is really a loss for us. I mean just think about it. Mitten's is a gaff every other day and that's when he's being careful.
I think a wounded Romney comes into the convention and wins a weakened first ballot but still wins. Some of the hard cores aren't happy and that is a very good thing for us. Really this probably a better outcome. I was thinking about it last night as I considered perhaps crossing over to vote for Satan (Santorum - for the record I didn't). Romney is a good sacrificial lamb for this cycle. Really I think this one is made to order for us.
He's a terrible candidate. If we don't get mittens then we might face a last minute golden child who is appears on the scene as a savior for the conservative reptilian cause. A wounded Romney is better than a wild card.
We'll take a sure win for Obama thank you very much!

(22,308 posts)and with only about 2% of the vote being (D)s crossing over I can see why he won here (I live in Wayne County / Detroit).

(1,033 posts)People who were for the bailout did not vote in the primary. That means so-called Reagan Democrats, who comprise the rest of the electorate around here, were the ones who showed up. They're turned off by Santorum's preachiness, so they vote Romney.
In the general election, Romney stands no chance in Hell against President Obama in the Detroit area.
