NFL fan stages Team Tampon Tailgate protest at Cleveland Browns game

CLEVELAND -The Muni Lot is infamous in Cleveland for its many interesting Browns tailgating parties. The scene before Sunday's season opener versus the Miami Dolphins though may have been a first: Team. Tampon. Tailgate.

It’s the brainchild of Jen Verrillo, a blogger and NFL fan who is none too happy with the NFL’s new purse policy, which allows only clear bags no larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches into the stadium.

“Do you feel safer knowing who has a tampon stash? Are you terrified that under-appreciated soccer moms are secretly terrorists? My guess is no,” Verrillo snarkily writes on the Facebook event page for the tailgate.

Verrillo was joined by other supporters Thursday night at Lakewood’s World of Beer for a purse-making party.

Sunday, the tampon team took its territory, not too different from other congregations, music playing and drinks flowing, but also with Ziploc bags held together by orange tape on their shoulders and picket signs in hand.

"I feel much safer (knowing about your tampons)," read a sign held up by Christian Dela Vega.

Other signs said "1...2...3...4...Tampons do not start a war," and a double-sided piece reading "Am I supposed to put my wallet and keys in my....uterus?!"

I just have to shake my head about this.

Or maybe bang my head against something hard.

Security theater is silly. It accomplishes nothing.

Are all purses prohibited?

No. Unlike some event venues, we are not banning all bags. Small clutch purses, with or without a handle or strap, are permitted along with either the 12” by 6” by 12” clear tote bag or the one-gallon freezer bag. This should enable you to carry the same items you have in previous years and speed entry into the stadium for all fans because it will take less time to screen bags. Shorter lines means fewer hassles. We encourage fans not to bring any bags, but have created a policy that balances fan needs with improved public safety and convenience.

Do I have to put everything I’m carrying into the permissible bags?

No. We are limiting only the type of bags carried into the stadium, not items that you normally bring to a game. Therefore, you can carry in your pockets or jacket keys, makeup, feminine products, comb, phone, wallet, credit cards, etc., if you choose not to put them in a clear bag or clutch. And you can carry a blanket over your arms, and binoculars and/or camera around your neck or in your hands without the case. You can use the clear bag and clutch to carry other items. You will continue to have the flexibility to bring a wide variety of approved items into the stadium. Every member of your family may carry in a permissible bag.

Their only interest is keeping out snacks and booze. Inconveniencing women is of no consequence when $10 beers are involved.
