At the annual Afropunk Music Festival in Brooklyn, Le1f told us about the time he was stopped-and-frisked on the way to a magazine interview.

What happened when you were stopped by cops?
Le1f: I was on my way to another interview. I’m in a cab. I get out after having an argument with this cab for [dropping me off] in the wrong place. The cops saw that I had some issue with the driver, but mind you, it was a $20 cab. I gave him $30 for taking me to the wrong place. So I get out of the cab and under the bridge on Delancey Street, and they stopped and frisked me, put me in handcuffs, and asked me what happened. I had to stop the cab driver. It was a whole situation. They wanted to know what happened with me and this cab driver, and put me in handcuffs without reading my rights and all that kind of shit.

Do you view stop-and-frisk as a problem in the city?
Stop-and-frisk is obviously a problem. It’s like allowing people to harass people. It reminds me of Jim Crow. It’s legit like a Jim Crow law.

And as exposed in the Schoolcraft Tapes (see the Village Voice series), NYPD has quotas they push officers to meet. 'Stop and Frisk' is one means that the departments have to 'boost the numbers', and *appear* to be doing more than they are.

This is what happens when you run a police department 'like a business'- officers have incentive to 'cook the books' as it were.

cops stopped me over a hundred times in my youth. never found drugs but kept stopping me and doing invasive searches of my underwear all when i was 11 to 18. cops here in france never treated me like that. police really think white kids on bikes are criminals and they stopped us all the time. they also tried to tell me how to cut my hair!!!! as if that was their fucking job...and according to the psychologist i saw those cops molested me. i believe blacks when they tell me shit like this happens but most of you deny that it happens to whites too.

i actually started smoking weed because i had had cops feel my genitals in dozens of stops already so i figured if i had already been punished as such i may as well try the drug they had been accusing me of having for years. when i told that to a cop who was searching me he punched me. i was 14. they also beat me many times because i said they had no right to just stop people. they beat me and said their badges and guns meant they could do whatever they wanted. hell one time cops planted a huge bag of crack on my cousin and i until our millionaire grandfather bitched them out on the phone...
