Worst Actress Razzie award goes to the Alaskan Grifter Quitter
Perhaps Sarah Palin's ability to work a crowd into a frenzy is attributable to her theatricality -- that blend of folksiness and conviction that makes her such a recognizable political voice. So when the Razzie (short for Golden Raspberry) awards, the annual antithesis to the Oscars, announced the nominations for worst actress on Sunday, Palin's name was among the contenders, despite the fact that the film for which she is nominated is a documentary that she shot no new footage for.
The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation gives away prizes annually to the worst of the past year's cinema, with categories for worst picture, worst actor and "worst prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel," among others. The nomination announcement came in the leadup to the Academy Awards on Sunday night.
Palin was nominated for her role in "The Undefeated," an unabashedly pro-Palin documentary following her life from the early days, with a heavy focus on her time as half-term Governor of Alaska until her pick as John McCain's running mate in the 2008 presidential election. The film opened to lackluster reviews and some empty houses, and it's unclear if it made back its production budget.
Palin's nomination comes as an odd one though, considering she had no part in the actual production of "The Undefeated," and any footage of her was not new, but rather culled from older public appearances or interviews. But apparently the folks who do the nominating over at the Razzies believe that Palin's public persona is act enough.
