(593 posts)Diplomacy is sort of like a choose your own adventure. (Yes, that is very much oversimplifying it). There is probably a plan with several branches based on what occurs over time.

(7,408 posts)And what we had to concede. I would guess we have to cut any training and aid to the rebels. Given the alternative it's probably better at this point for Assad to stay in power and bring some stability back to the country.
Just Saying
(1,799 posts)Except not really since I understand that working to hold Assad's regime accountable for the use of chemical weapons doesn't mean he cannot at the same time work diplomatic channels to get them out of his hands so it doesn't happen again.

(229 posts)We've heard the good talking-points before, and been betrayed on almost every front - economics and trade in particular (secret TPP?).
"I ... instructed John Kerry to talk to the Russians..."
The Russians have been trying to create a peace-agreement since the beginning. The USA and "our" (sic) CIA / Saudi armed so-called "rebels" have opposed this at every step, refusing to participate.
I Do "Hope" President Obama will work with the Russians to obtain a peaceful solution - but that will require giving up the Western-Transnational-Corporate goal of controlling a critical Russian-competing gas-pipeline through Libya - which is a primary reason that The West And Saudis Started The Syrian Civil War to begin with. I guess we won't see the instigators who caused the loss of ~100K lives in Syria in the Hague - any more than Bush and Cheney have been sent there for Iraq and torture.
Perhaps, at this point, the Transnationals might settle for a weakened-Assad encircled by their Wahhabi-Terrorist proxy-army and Western Military Bases ... they can smash it up and haul it off peace-meal, like when they dismembered Yugoslavia and stole the resources and formerly-public infrastructure there.

CW .. "don't discriminate between someone in uniform and ... an infant child."
But Drone-launched missiles aimed at weddings and funerals do? Specific to Syria, what about the other ~ 99,000 or so that were killed by non-chemical means? Are their deaths any less gruesome or tragic?
Also, why do "the rebels" operate in population-centers - using children as "human shields?" That is what we always hear when groups the Western Transnationals do not like are 'the rebels' ... er, I mean "terrorists." (hard to tell when to use which term these days). Double-Standard Much?

... The peace conference would be based on a 2012 joint resolution issued by the United States, Russia and others. ... The bombs-away crowd isnt happy. Elliot Abrams, the neoconservative hardliner who worked for George W. Bush and then somehow found his way into the Council on Foreign Relations ... if the rebels refuse to attend, the United States would be hard pressed to continue to support them.

But they have continued, with US backing.

The Syrian rebels have said they will not attend a peace conference with members of the Assad regime. The Free Syrian Army and councils in Berlin and Turkey that are representing the rebels want the West to back them militarily so they can topple Assad.

Washington and Moscow announced plans for the peace conference last month, but their relations have since deteriorated rapidly, as momentum on the battlefield has swung in favour of President Bashar al-Assad.

Head of Syrian Opposition Rejects Talks With Assad
... He (rebel leader) said that the opposition would not negotiate with President Bashar al-Assad or his clique and that talks could begin only when the military situation in Syria was positive for rebel forces.

Only a gas-attack could change the equation in favor of the rebels and, "Wouldn't 'cha know it," just in the nick of time - like the Gulf of Tonkin, USS Maine, etc. Glad the American People seem not to have fallen for it, this time.

As regards the 1st Link:
"The bombs-away crowd isnt happy. Elliot Abrams, the neoconservative hardliner who worked for George W. Bush and then somehow found his way into the Council on Foreign Relations ..."
I have to interject here, this is unbelievable spin: The CFR was created by Rockefeller to run the State Dept / Military as the private-army and international-negotiators of the Transnationals. Yet, to spite the historical facts and consequences, this war-monger for the Billionaire Earth-Thieves "somehow found his way into the CFR..."??? I suppose because they are usually more subtle, with former directors like Dick Cheney, and all (who laughed how hid this fact from his then-Wyoming constituents, at the time).
It would be funny, except that this gang of war-criminals has killed millions for "their interests" in the last 60 years or so - to a large extent under our flag, with our taxes, and in our name. For starters ... http://www.whale.to/b/stockwell1.html
