...get ready for a bunch of House Republicans - the same ones who were so piously ready to vote against an attack yesterday - to come out with OBAMA'S A BIG WIMP KILL KILL KILL ATTACK NOW AMERICA'S REPUTATION BLAAARGH.
Water = wet. Sky = up. This = happening. Count on it.
P.S. I'm THRILLED that they're seeking a diplomatic solution, and I pray this works, but face it: this is the diplomatic version of some blind pigs finding an acorn and saying they knew it was there all along.

That having been said: please work. Please please please.

(18,115 posts)If the House does put something like that up, and it passes, it would be one hurdle to war passed.
Things have been moving quickly, and anything could still happen. I'm with you, please make this work. Cautious optimism.

(47,953 posts)Oh how dare he criticize Obama! Obama planned this out all along. He knew his enemy Putin would come up with a plan to take the chemical weapons away from Assad if only Obama talked tough enough! 23 dimensional chess!

(58,179 posts)A lot of people desperate to scold fellow DUers for having sound powers of observation, and for not obeying the imperative to put a positive spin on everything the administration does.
I hope this works, but it takes a special kind of self-delusion to see this as the evolution of some master plan.

(47,953 posts)And I think Obama is smart enough to take this route out of the corner he has painted himself into. I just hope the Syrians figure out a way to end their civil war before something else gets the attention of the Hawks.

(45,274 posts)Thanks, Obama.
I'm still amazed at how he managed to turn the public against the attack while pretending to push for it. What incredible statesmanship!

Please, please, please.

(39,909 posts)... have insisted from the start that a negotiated, diplomatic, non-military approach was proper method of dealing with the problems in Syria.

The White House official said that Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin had discussed Syria surrendering its chemical weapons stockpile last June at the G-20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico. The two talked over the possibility again last week in St. Petersburg. So the idea has been on the table for a while, even before the Aug. 21 attack in the Damascus suburbs and before Obama publicly supported military strikes in retaliation, but it was the threat of imminent strikes that brought it to fruition, as the White House tells it.
This is called diplomacy, and the big stick is a tool in the box. We just saw it played masterfully and effectively.

(10,960 posts)IIRC, Obama said that if Assad disarmed, that would put it on pause
(Which suggests a follow up question... if Syria unilaterally disarmed, why would that be pause rather than stop?)

(2,667 posts)Its the new war that hasn't started yet that we may have paused, but there is certainly no pause in our war-making both at home and abroad.
On Edit: I'm sorry, this above did not come out sounding like it should have. I agree with your posting completely, I just wanted to point out that Afghanistan seems to be a more forgotten war than even Korea. There is something that has gone horribly wrong with us as evidenced by our perpetual war. It must stop or I'm sure we will parish as a nation.
