to be willfully ignorant than to be angry and outraged.

Cheers!

all the various manuevering, and what we wind up with isn't disaster, but the one situation where (potentially) everyone wins and we don't have a war. Even Assad wins, as now the best interests of the international community are served by his remaining in power to follow through on clearing out Syria's chemical weapons.

Personally, I can't think of a better result. Even regarding Assad, his behavior has been the problem, not his existence. Giving up chemical weapons is a big step to becoming a different kind of leader, and making Syria into a different kind of partner in the international community.

... that going out like a bully asking for blood and then being forced to retreat because of the public opinion overwhelming opposition is "doing something right".

I'm glad the US government stopped acting like a pitbull with rabies, but they shouldn't have acted this way in first place.

So, no, Obama has no merit here.

The only ones lusting for an Obama disaster were his staff at the WH and the Pentagon. We were right here telling him "do not become a war criminal, president".

You're welcome.

For this to work, Obama and Kerry has to convince everyone that military action will happen. It has pissed off a lot of people and hurt Obama's popularity, but it's worked.

Putin is the only one who can influence Assad and make him give up the chem weapons. The governments have a symbiotic relationship - Russia provides Syria $$ and weapons and in turn, Syria allows Russia to maintain a military base there (the only one they have in the ME, and outside of Russia).

It's in Putin's best interest to not allow Syria to be destabilized; Assad will listen to Putin because he wants to stay in power.

Obama has played this brilliantly.
