It sure would be wonderful if the American people had any sense of history. Few do.

Why do the Persians/Iranians hate us? The US along with the Brits overthrew popularly elected governments in Iran--twice. Why? OIL. Naturally. How many people here know about that?

Why did the US and Brits and the "willing" invade Iraq? Operation Iraqi Liberation, a.k.a. OIL.

Why did the US, et al, invade Afghanistan? Not Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda, otherwise they wouldn't have let them get away. In 1998 and earlier, there were maps of central Asia with proposed routes for gas pipelines. Now, large deposits of rare earth minerals needed for high tech electronics, like your cell phones, tablets, computers, were also discovered in Afghanistan. Freedom? Liberation? Hardly: Our taxes helping corporations get richer.

When the Zionists arrived in Palestine in the 19th century, there were already thousands of Jews living among the Muslims and Christians. They were the Jews who stayed when most left, or were expelled two thousand years ago, as the story goes. Newly arrived Zionists treated them about the same as their neighbors--not so well. Many left when European Zionists arrived, and joined their friends in Turkey, Persia, Spain, France, north Africa. My uncle was born in Istanbul in the 1890s, moved to Jerusalem with his business, and left because he was welcomed by Muslims and Christians, but unwelcome among the eastern European Jewish immigrants, even though he was also Jewish, but Sephardic, not Ashkenazi. He soon moved to Paris and did very well there.

The main problem with Israel is that it's the last European colony in the Middle East, and they haven't been good neighbors, unlike the native Jews many of whom have been treated as the 'underclass' of Israel.

Israel's neighbors will treat them better when Israel is a better neighbor. They can start by removing all settlements that infringe on Palestinian land to the east, then remove the wall, and stop the blockade of Gaza. What's wrong with Israel being a good neighbor instead of paranoid and violent?
