If it were all part of a grand and winning chess stategy from the beginning . . .

. . . he sure didn't come across in the speech tonight as a man who was at all confident that this alleged "strategy" would be successful. Instead, he continued to try to make the case for why his original proposal of missile strikes was justified. Rather, it was the speech of someone who had an alternate strategy foisted upon him by events (and by public opposition). That blows a pretty big hole in the 11-dimensional chess theory!

Cameron suffered some serious damage last week. If this ill-considered theory were true, it would mean Obama had knowingly deceived David Cameron into damaging his position and his legacy, all the while knowing he would pursue a diplomatic solution in the end. David Cameron wouldn't sit still for that. Barack Obama wouldn't burn America's closest ally like that. It's a reverse-engineered fantasy.
