9/11 anniversary to be marked with tributes

NEW YORK (AP) — Sept. 11 victims' loved ones will gather at ground zero to commemorate the attacks' anniversary with the reading of names, moments of silence and serene music that have become tradition.

At Wednesday's ceremony on the 2-year-old memorial plaza, relatives will recite the names of the nearly 3,000 people who died when hijacked jets crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pa., as well as the 1993 trade center bombing victims' names. Beforehand, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, musician Billy Joel, firefighters and others are expected to join in a tribute motorcycle ride from a Manhattan firehouse to ground zero.

Name-reading, wreath-laying and other tributes also will be underway at the Pentagon and at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville while the commemoration unfolds at ground zero, where the mayor who has helped orchestrate the observances from their start will be watching for his last time in office. And saying nothing.

Continuing a decision made last year, no politicians will speak, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

3. I am surprised at your comment.

It seems insensitive and I hope that you forgot your sarcasm tag. This is a post noting that some will reflect on the events that happened twelve years ago. If you were trying to make a joke, then you may want to edit or delete the comment because I could see where others would consider it to be inappropriate. Thanks.

Even though it has been 12 years, I still believe that is too soon to be laughing about the event. I apparently posted this thread at the wrong time of the night.

not saying I can pull off humor the way the pros can. I am just so inured at the moment. My facebook wall is full of a bunch of Velvet Elvis looking puke about 9/11 by a bunch of conservatives who get their gingoistic/patriotic hard on thinking about 9/11.

I can tell you this--I led a relatively sheltered life clear up until I was 31. That was the year the United States got RAPED by Bush v. Gore and I watched my vote mean nothing and knew we were fucked. Then 1 year later....it all came to pass. The personal violation and anger I felt when the towers started crumbling is hard to describe, but I am sure many here felt it. When I saw people jumping. When I saw the U.S. foreign policy come home to roost...

I have since been touched by much closer tragedy such as the death of my mother and twin sister to cancer in the space of 16 months. So, I know the deep and abiding hole in the hearts of those family members who lost someone on 9/11.

Still, the whole 9/11 thing has been so coopted and distorted and bastardized...it is hard for me to not be cynical and look for inappropriate humor.

I admit that there is a time and place for humor since it helps to deaden the pain that occurs in tragedies like 9/11. Many people, including myself made fun of Mayor Giuliani regarding his use of the phrase during the presidential campaign in 2008. I just felt it was inappropriate to take such liberties in a tribute thread. Please excuse me for taking you to task on your earlier comment.

especially the people trapped in those buildings waiting and hoping to be rescued but never made it.

i was never into the tributes though. especially when they seemed to become more about exploiting the event rather than about remembering those who were lost. and especially when it was more about propping certain politicians.

but i have no problem with those who were affected and especially those who lost someone doing anything they want to deal with it.

rather than parties and mourning. I would like to see the country appreciate what really happened and not use it to stir up fear and hate.

I will never forget walking through a park on 9/13 and finding a bunch of guys surrounding a Sikh. The guy I worked with was under 5 feet and probably under 100 pounds, but he walked up and took the Sikh from the crowd, We walked him to the post office about 100 feet away (very small satellite one) and the woman locked the doors and called the police so they could get him out as this group formed into a mob. How could they not understand he was not a Muslim? Not that it would be any better.
