The greatest calypsonian of all time The Mighty Sparrow lies in a coma in New York

This was his song on Martin Luther King
Segregation must be destroyed!!

This one was when the US Military base at Chagaramas shut down - Jean and Dinah were prostitutes.

hasn't been well for some time. Yes this is the end.

Funny he did a great song called memories about musicians and performers dying.

Brilliant writing - loads of social commentary. He was actually born in Grenada but his family moved to Trinidad. Won several carnival titles. He was such a part of my life, it's hard to believe this is the end.

I remember borrowing a couple of his albums from a classmate in high school -- her parents were Trinidadian and huge Mighty Sparrow fans. I never gave the albums back.

Bet they had other copies. We have most of his music.
He did a classic when that man entered Buckingham Palace and supposedly the Queen's bedroom. His clever use of words made that song a favorite of all who heard it.

And I love calypso music, too. Have to check him out now, but am sad that it took this for his work to come to my attention.

So many of the world's best artistes knew their language and hence we have amazing lyrics.
This one is hilariously clever as you wrote.
Sparrow could be serious but he was often loads of fun.

Check out Drunk and Disorderly for fun and Dan is the man in the Van for a serious commentary on British colonial education.
