Bill proposes no straw hole for drive-through daiquiris
Louisiana lawmakers will consider restrictions on drive-through daiquiri sales when they convene next month.
Senator Dan Claitor proposes legislation to make it illegal for drive-through daiquiri shops to copntinue to use lids that can be punctured by a straw.
"This bill simply says it can't be pre-perforated," he explained.
The Baton Rouge lawmaker wants to remove the straw hole to make it harder for drive-through daiquiri customers to put a straw in their drink while they drive to their destination.
Claitor says he filed this exact bill two years ago and it didn't get out of committee.

(146,218 posts)At first, they would serve you the daquiri with the straw in it.
Then they changed the law so that the straw would be given to you, but it would still be in it's wrapper.
No, no hole for the straw?

(146,218 posts)People get them on their way home or run out to pick some up for a group gathering.
They also sell them by the gallon.
They are delicious and particularly refreshing in the summer. You can't make them at home unless you have one of those special machines.
I miss them.

(16,646 posts)Those "special machines"? There were frozen daiquiris before there were any "special machines". Heck, an immersion blender will make a large pitcher of 'em.

(146,218 posts)A blender will make an "frozen" drink, but it is not the same as a New Orleans daiquiri.
It's hard to describe the difference if you have never had one, but there is a big difference.

(16,646 posts)Finely ground ice, frozen after the fact. You take a good blender, blend the hell out of the ice, stick it back in the freezer for 20 minutes or so.

(146,218 posts)get some for the grown-ups and the kids (virgin daiquiris) at the same time AND
avoid all that mess and bother AND
they are still just not the same.
The daiquiri machine, because it is constantly stirring, doesn't end up with icy edges and liquidy parts.
It is a slurpee, just better.

That's a "special" machine in the kitchen these days?

They make it, lid it, and then put it in a plastic bag which they then heat seal. And that TOTALLY keeps people from drinking and driving.

(692 posts)Yet another attack on common sense by Big Sobriety. With this intrusive legislation, Lousiana is practically insuring that thousands of drunk drivers will die when they use their handguns to quickly put a new straw hole in the tops of their daquiri cups, wounding themselves in their own laps and possibly igniting the fuel lines.
My God, think of the thighs!
