Marissa Mayer: 'It's Treason' For Yahoo To Disobey The NSA



Marissa Mayer was on stage on Wednesday at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference when Michael Arrington asked her about NSA snooping.

He wanted to know what would happen if Yahoo just didn’t cooperate. He wanted to know what would happen if she were to simply talk about what was happening, even though the government had forbidden it.

“Releasing classified information is treason. It generally lands you incarcerated,” she said, clearly uncomfortable with the turn of the conversation.

She also explained that when the government comes calling wanting information on Yahoo users, the company scrutinizes each request and “we push back a lot on requests.” But “we can’t talk about those things because they’re classified,” she said.

This has been going on long before her reign, too, she said:

“I’m proud to be part of an organisation that from the very beginning in 2007, with the NSA and FISA and PRISM, has been sceptical and has scrutinized those requests. In 2007 Yahoo filed a lawsuit against the new Patriot Act, parts of PRISM and FISA, we were the key plaintiff. A lot of people have wondered about that case and who it was. It was us … we lost. The thing is, we lost and if you don’t comply it’s treason.”

Disregarding the stupid-ass syntax, WTF does this mean? Does this mean Marissa Mayer has been given a clearance for classified information and gets briefed on it? Or does it mean that she got a scawwy letter that threatened her with a charge of treason if the company didn't comply? Both options fill me with despair.

That was my first reaction too. Doubtful the employees at Yahoo! have security clearance - so why are they subject to the same security treatment?

It would be like me giving you a document between me and a 3rd party that is marked "confidential." You have no obligation to maintain the confidences and if you decide to breach that confidence, it would be me - the party to the confidentiality agreement in the first place - that is subject to penalty.

I do feel confident in saying the gov't team has many attorneys that have twisted and contorted enough rules/regs (to the point a contortionist would be embarrassed) to "sweep everyone under the rules & penalties" - even if we don't know we're subject to those rules.

Think Dean Wormer and "Double Secret Probation." We're all on double secret probation... even if we don't know it.

their Site...after being listed as giving away my Data....now has my Exact Location here in the USA for my Weather Report. They have My Street Name GIVING ME WEATHER!

This is NEW... Damned site thinks they can "Go for Broke" after NSA Spying Scandal to SPY ON ME MORE!

I'm not kidding about this. Marissa is so "under fire" for her new Position as CEO of YAHOO that's she's pulled out all PRIVACY STOPS for YAHOO that she's found a way to track me to my exact location, where I live and give me weather located to my Subdivision where I LIVE.

And no matter how I try to stop her link to my location...it keeps popping up!

It's like these Websites are so thrilled the NSA has revealed their SECRETS they are going for BROKE pushing EVEN MORE invasions of our Privacy to us!

I even delisted YAHOO as my Homepage on FIREFOX...and it keeps coming back along with my exact LOCATION for Weather Reports.

Whatever......what do we do and how do we all move forward with this TRACKING.

I have E-Mail with Yahoo for Amazon Purchases and a few Other Things...but, I'm ready to cancel it all.

Anyone else have this VERY RECENT problem with Yahoo and Marissa trying to RAMP SALES on backs of our Privacy?
