More cop brutality 'goodness'.....

Both from Florida this time....

On August 10, 2013 Christina West was arrested for driving under the influence in Tallahassee, Florida. While she is being cuffed she claims that she did “awesome” during the field sobriety test. After they cuff her and direct her from the intersection to the back seat of the cruiser, she is concerned and wants to make sure that she didn’t hurt anyone.

An officer interviews the men, including ”David” and “Pasqual”–off screen about the car crash. All three identify “Christy” or “Christine” as the driver. It is just before 4am and no one seems to know what happened–why she drove into a house.

The officers then discuss the situation outside the cruiser, as Christina knocks on the inside of the window of the cruiser so she can be included in the conversation. The police then open door to cruiser and ask her to get out for a breath test. Christina is drunk and not making much sense and the police proceed to smash her head into the back of the cruiser and onto the pavement in the intersection. She screams in agony as several police officers physically abuse here and others gather round to watch.

These two are real gems:

Two Lauderhill, Florida police officers were arrested Friday and charged with simple battery and unlawful compensation for allegedly forcing a woman into having sex with one of them and ordering one to punch the other in the groin, to avoid arrest.

KTVJ-TV reported that 33-year-old Franklin Hartley and 34-year-old Thomas Merenda were released on bond and are on administrative leave in connection with a May 24, 2012 traffic stop involving two women who were leaving a local strip club when they were allegedly pulled over by Hartley. Police records indicate the two women were drunk at the time.

Threatning them with arrest, Hartley then allegedly directed the women to follow him to a nearby building, where Merenda joined them. Hartley allegedly had sex with the passenger, then directed the driver to punch Merenda in the genitals.

or any other serious crime should be punished more severely than average citizens are for the same crimes. There are laws that protect officers: assaulting or killing a cop is a higher offense than assaulting or killing a 'civilian.' Responsibility should go with their authority; they should be held to a higher standard than the rest of us. It's hard to have a cop prosecuted, I know, but if they are, the law should really make them pay.

And I think states need to start putting initiatives on the ballot to create elected citizen's oversight boards, with the power to fire officers and make criminal complaints against them. Make sure the members are elected, so if they keep sitting on their hands while cops roid-rage on the public, they get their asses thrown out of office. And make sure they have actual teeth - power to fire, power to forbid from re-hire, power to impose administrative penalties including unpaid suspensions and docking of pay for officers they don't quite want to fire.

It's such a good idea that the police unions would probably fight it tooth and nail, but something like it is becoming necessary. Our elected officials aren't doing anything about it right now.
