Following a horrible tragedy in 2012 when a father killed his three young daughters, staff at the credit union realized that they serviced the family's home mortgage.
From the story:
"The credit union could have simply let the bottom line guide its decisionmaking the foreclosure judgment was about $181,000. Instead, its leaders asked a question that speaks volumes about Affinitys institutional values: Whats best for the family?
Credit union staff reached out to Jessica. She preferred that the home to be torn down and that salvageable parts, such as trusses, be donated to Habitat for Humanity.
We talked internally and spoke to the board of the credit union. Everyone agreed it was the right thing to do, said Dave Larson, Affinitys interim president and CEO."

Now the Big Guys are out to destroy the CU's with a big lobbying effort to institute unfair taxation of nonprofit organizations.
