Bullied 12-year-old kills herself

Lakeland - A 12-year-old Floridian girl killed herself after she was bullied online by more than a dozen girls. The Sheriff is investigating to see if he can pursue charges under Florida’s cyber-bullying law.

Sheriff Judd of Polk County said that Rebecca Anne Sedgwick ended her life by jumping to her death at an old cement production facility in Lakeland, Florida. Judd said she was “absolutely terrorized” by the girls on social media sites.

The Lakeland Ledger that some of the messages she received included

"“Why are you still alive?”"
and
"“Go kill yourself,”"

An investigation of her previous search results included queries about how many Advil it took to overdose, and she had recently changed her name on a free social messaging application to “That Dead Girl.” They also found photos of Sedgwick with her head resting on a railroad track.

He said it appears the bullying started sometime in 2012 and was physical at her former school, Crystal Lake Middle School.

After Rebecca left Crystal Lake in February to be home- schooled, the bullying moved online.

Detectives have learned the bullying might have started over a boyfriend problem, Judd said.

"We're trying to sort out a bunch of girl talk that goes further than girl talk," he said.

Judd said a 12-year-old boy in North Carolina, whom Rebecca met through social media, knew of her plan. Rebecca messaged him only hours before her death, saying she was dead and "I'm jumping, I can't take it anymore."

5. I can deal with adult suicides because I understand how tired, discouraged people get

but teens? Pre-teens?

God damn all the bullies to hell.

I can't understand it at all. I went to an all-girls school where, despite cliques, there was never this sort of cruelty. The worst they dished out was indifference. What's going on these days boggles my mind.
