Debunking 6 myths about gun control
In the last several months, many have written letters to the editor about gun control and, more specifically, about background checks and magazine capacity. Many of the letters have been informative, others have been less so, and many have had an extreme emotional or partisan point of view. The stated opposition to gun control usually falls into one of the following categories: infringement of Second Amendment rights, protection from the tyranny of the government, criminals dont obey laws, it is already illegal, new legislation would be difficult if not impossible to enforce, and personal protection.
On the subject of the infringement of Second Amendment rights, many folks believe that the recent proposed federal legislation would be the first step in confiscating our guns, and they are not aware of the 1934 National Firearms Act and 1968 Firearms Act that effectively eliminated the Tommy Gun and devices such as grenades, bombs, explosives, poison gas weapons, etc. Additional federal gun regulation occurred in 1986, 1990 and, most notably, in the 1994 background check legislation. In the nearly 80 years of gun regulation, no one has come to take away our guns. Our right to own arms has stood the test of time, and the so-called infringements have been minor limitations enacted for the benefit to society.
