ABC News just said 1,200 unaccounted for. Prayers go out to you, Colorado!

I have a friend out there. he said yesterday that he is fine, just some water leaking in his basement, but I worry.

I really think that the unaccounted number might be due to the lack of being able to communicate.
The pictures I have seen are terrible -- I'm sure that people have been cut off from being able to call or get out.

(23,674 posts)have heard anything, so most of them are thinking things are ok and they're just stuck with out communications.

(60,010 posts)as people are found, others not "accounted for".
Just means that for now no news may be good news, in that these are not body counts, but simply people who for now can not be located.
More than possible that Facebook has info. on folks that the "officials" may not have.

(11,589 posts)I like here and there on his page. I agree that at this point, no news is good news.
I know a lot of people aren't fans of the BoF (book of face ) but these are times when it does help to know how people are doing.

(60,010 posts)After we here in Alabama went thru those devasting tornadoes couple years back
someone on FB organized a page that people all over the SE could list any pics, mail, etc they found miles away from
where the tornadoes hit.
People in Tennesee were finding Alabama scraps, people in Alabama were finding Mississippi papers, posting them.
Many storm victims were able to get at least a pic or 2 of a loved one back.
Reading those postings made me cry.

There was a reason for that.

(650 posts)I am convinced the levee was 'blown'.
If the US economy ever recovers, we will see hotels and casinos where the 9th used to be. I am a musician who has spent a lot of time in New Orleans and I have played with the best. I know people who have not heard from their families since FEMA scattered them to the winds.
New Orleans was third on the Most Hated List (R), behind San Francisco and NYC.
Three days after Katrina, Gatemouth Brown called me and said (among other things), "They gonna kill us all". He then went to his daughter's home (his childhood home) in Orange, Texas, laid down on her couch and died.

(3,076 posts)The aftermath of Katrina was no accident. The Bush administration saw it as the perfect way to "solve" a problem, and made sure that the levees didn't survive the storm. I think the death toll was considerably larger than what was reported, and I believe the stories of executions by police and military of civilians after the storm was over. Think about it... total chaos, no communications, no news coverage in large parts of the city. It was, for the Bush administration, a perfect opportunity to do a little domestic "house cleaning."
mahina
(17,506 posts)it, but the response to Katrina broke all our hearts. It was obvious we were considered disposable, even from here. It was and remains the most brutal mass action againt our people in my lifetime.
When we think about disaster prep we remember Katrina, and we know we will be on our own.

(10,493 posts)and at least one of the TV stations before he passed. That was the message he wanted to get out before he died. "Gate Mouth" Brown was a blues man of some repute, an amazing talent who had been playing the blues forever. He had seen it all and was convinced that the outrageously poor response was intentional! I am involved in the BP oil spill litigation and have been to NOLA many times, before and after Katrina. It's hard to argue against Gate Mouth!

(41,915 posts)This is the worst since Katrina, and that's saying a hell of a lot. I don't know if those levees were blown but I do know they let NO get by with an antiquated, poorly run levee system and pumping stations and life just plain ended for whole generations.
I hope they give those people all the help they need. Who'd have thought Colorado?

(23,674 posts)of those unaccounted for are just with out communication capability. It's frustrating tho...keep hoping to hear from my good friends and it's unnerving because every time I hear a broadcast about the floods, the umber of missing keeps going up and not down.

(7,968 posts)so I'm optimistic that much of this list is due to the fact that bridges and roads are washed out and people can't get to a place where they are accounted for but they may well be safe in a safe shelter.
intheflow
(28,407 posts)Not really rough terrain. The number of accounted for people has risen sharply since hitting the plains and moving eastward. But of course, especially in this era of cell phones, it's highly likely that people have just lost cell coverage and/or run out of battery with no way to recharge. I certainly hope so, anyway.

(23,674 posts)I never suffered from a flood, but did have a house fire in which our family had to jump off of our roof. We lost everything. I know how scary it is, and I also know of the struggle to rebuild is. For many years after, every once in awhile I would turn around and look for something that wasn't there.
deutsey
(20,166 posts)I don't mean just pooling. I mean potentially catastrophic flooding unless I sit out there in the elements keeping the drain clear.
Still, those instances were nothing compared to as what's happening in CO.
kag
(4,076 posts)and North Boulder creek runs just in front of our house. I truly think that many of the "missing" are people who have, for one reason or another, lost communication, or simply don't know that they are "missing".
The creek is running fast and hard, and it is dangerous, but in most places it is staying within its banks. The really tough problems are the ones just down the hill in Boulder and other front range towns where the water is rushing in a big fat hurry and has nowhere else to go. Lots of basements are flooding, ruining furniture, electrical equipment, etc. A friend of mine lost his state-of-the-art sound system, and so won't be doing any house concerts for a while.
I am sad for the families of the three fatalities, two of whom were only about twenty-years-old. But for the most part people are behaving pretty rationally, staying home if they can, and helping out their neighbors.
For those DUers who might not know, Boulder/Nederland/Jamestown is one of the left/progressive/democrat strongholds in the state. People are all about helping out their neighbors and doing what we can to improve the community, even if it just means staying off of the roads and letting the first responders do what they are trained to do.
