Republicans are now trying to figure out which ethnicities they haven't pissed off yet and are working to make those mad at them too. They are now insulting the First Indian American Miss America as "Not representing America's values" All I can say is, Americans with ancestry in the subcontinent, we Democrats DO think you represent America's values. Welcome to the Democratic Party, the party of diversity, inclusion and tolerance.

(32,886 posts)for instance, some are complaining that we now have a "Muslim Miss America". Of course, like a majority of Indians, our new Miss America is Hindu.
If Republicans had more awareness of the rest of the world, I am sure they would more rapidly get around to specifically insulting each group in turn. They'll get there anyway, but their ignorance prevents them from doing it faster.

(32,886 posts)Their base is heavily invested against diversity and tolerance. That's one of the reasons Romney twice gave speeches trying to convince "people" (Republicans and other Conservatives mostly) that they shouldn't be afraid of supporting Mormons, one in 2008 and one in 2012, but did not make the speech broader about religious inclusion.
If he had, he would have further alienated his base. Republicanism depends on discrimination and intolerance.

NYC_SKP
(68,644 posts)I was born in parts of the country near Tuscarora and I travel extensively, and I'm always charmed by people I meet, including this summer some members of the Jemez Pueblo near Albuquerque on my way to Farmington, with a stop in Chaco Canyon (how about that?).
My question is this: Your reply was alerted upon for your use of the term "squaw" and one of the jurors found your use of the term "pale face" to be offensive, too.
I'm of a different, more tolerant mind, and willing to imagine that different cultures have different standards, and that we need to be respectful and give the benefit of the doubt.
It's quite possible that "squaw" is, in your circles, not an insult and might even be a term of endearment.
It's also possible that "pale face" is so commonly used that it doesn't offend anyone in your circles, including caucasians.
If you have time, please discuss use of these words with me, feel free to send a PM if you like, or even post in our Native American forum, here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1191
Thanks in advance.

(41,959 posts)I jumped back at the phrases too, but I know quite a few Indians (yes, Indians) who grin at the pc concerns of people who don't actually go on and get involved in any way with Indian life and bring their own opinions to bear in a thoughtful way. I've been struggling with this on DU lately, the tendency to clutch the pearls (yeah, but it's such a perfect description) and name call and alert rather than invite dialogue. And when I do, they generally don't honor me with a response.
So THANKS for that. I may meander over and see if a good talk ensues.

(32,886 posts)My first instinct was that I thought it was an offensive term, and ever reference I could find confirmed it.
I am willing to be proven wrong, particularly by the community at whom it would be aimed. I am also part Aborigine, Latin American Aborigine to be more specific, but am not as in tune with Native American issues as I would like.

(7,349 posts)I am fucking outraged, and I don't care if there are "Indians who smile" about my concerns. I don't have to be active in Native American politics or life to be offended. If he was married to a black woman and called her a "n*****" or something equally offensive, would you be inviting dialogue then?
It's way beyond acceptable and you apologists for racism make me sick.

(2,345 posts)Squaw is NOT an English word. It IS a phoenetic rendering of an Algonkian word that does NOT translate to "a woman's private parts." The word "squaw" - as "esqua," "squa," "skwa," "skwe" and other variants - traditionally means the totality of being female, not just the female anatomy. The word has been interpreted by modern activists as a slanderous assault against Native American women. But traditional Algonkian speakers, in both Indian and English, still say words like "nidobaskwa" = a female friend, "manigebeskwa" = woman of the woods, or "Squaw Sachem" = female chief. When Abenaki people sing the Birth Song, they address "nuncksquassis" = "little woman baby."
It seems it is a particularly 'American' thing to equate the feminine with a negativity that is not really present in the 'Native American' vernacular.
Is it at all possible that there is something else going on here that is causing your outrage?
It just seems a little bit over reactive.
stevenleser
(32,886 posts)It doesnt matter if a white person doesnt think the N word is derogatory. It's African Americans that get to decide when and how and if its use is non-discriminatory.
Same with words directed at LGBT, Hispanics, Muslims, Jews, etc.
So, as the alerter, I would say that I think that post is still hideworthy for use of "Pale Face" and its still a big questionmark over the use of the word to describe a native american female.
NYC_SKP's links don't say "It's never offensive", they just say it depends on the context and the way native Americans in the area of that person use the word.
whttevrr
(2,345 posts)So, as far as "squaw" goes, I would imagine the poster would have a better understanding of it's offense or reverence.
But "Pale Face"? Really?
You find that offensive?
Why?

(41,959 posts)And it doesn't help. It only shows you standing there with your anger, alone, rather than yes, standing in your own power and convictions but trying to talk and listen.
I've spent a lifetime with a roughly 20% Choctaw background, trying to understand how it affected my deeply ashamed grandmother, influenced my father (who could have registered during a time when the tribe was desperately seeking to fill the rolls) who didn't feel it fair to receive benefits, and me, who is proud of a specific ancestor for many reasons but is shy about the whole thing because I run the risk of being labeled a "wannabe" both in the tribe and out. I have Indian friends and there's no consensus on what is "right" and "wrong". Remember, the tribes and families are not homogenous. They're very varied and have many ways of seeing things.
It's complicated.
