(16,844 posts)Cronkite went on the air with the Soviet point of view. I'm sure there were people in the U.S. at the time who were thinking along those lines as well. I'm just surprised Cronkite reported it. The big event in my life was 9/11, and I can't imagine reporters at that time speculating outside the box about where that attack came from. That just shows you how much more controlled our media is today.

(16,844 posts)I've been told by people who were in high school at the time in other parts of the South that cheers erupted from some of the students when the assassination was announced over the intercom. It was revolting. My parents were in high school at the time, but they were living here on the Miss. coast and we're culturally different from other regions of the South. For one thing, there's a lot of Catholics down here and Kennedy was popular in this area.
It makes my skin crawl to think of kids doing that in school. I can't help but wonder if the same thing wouldn't happen today if something happened to Obama. Today, though, there's plenty of hate outside of the South too.
