The boy said the girl asked him to point the gun at her, and he said he aimed it too close to her ear while trying to aim past her shoulder.
Maphis said firearms in the house typically are locked and not accessible to children, but he had forgotten to put away the shotgun and unload it. He said the gun was left on top of a dog kennel in a room after he had been shooting at birds attacking his chickens the previous days.
The boys mother told the sheriffs department the boy has been shooting firearms since hes been 3 years old and he has a .22-caliber rifle hes allowed to shoot with parental supervision, according to the complaint.
Maphis is charged with leaving a loaded firearm near a child and obstructing an officer, both misdemeanors. He has an initial court appearance scheduled for Sept. 23.

The good news is the father's just been charged with misdemeanors, so there's no chance his guns will have to go to a gun orphanage.

(62,269 posts)I had chickens growing up, other birds stayed the fuck away because our chickens would fuck them up. They were well fed and highly protective of their food source. I can't imagine any birds willing to risk it with our chickens.

(2,667 posts)We used to keep a couple of dozen chickens around back when I used to eat eggs for breakfast most every day and we began losing them to unknown causes. One day we'd have 15 and the next 14, with no noises at night. Then one morning I was at the kitchen sink getting a glass of water and just sort of idly gazing out the window. There was a Rooster out in the yard eating grasshoppers or something and then out of nowhere Ka-Bang, here came this Hawk and he just nailed the chicken. The Hawk stood over the chicken holding it by the neck with one talon and then grabbed the body with both sets and just flew off with him. That Rooster had to weight 5 pounds but the Hawk had no trouble with it.

(28,017 posts)I read a study one time, perhaps 8-9 months ago.
Someone polled the NRA membership and found that the average NRA-er is rather moderate in his/her view. It is the leadership that is apeshit crazy. Knowing a few NRA members, I can see that being the case. Wish I could find the study.

(16,068 posts)The leadership gets most of its money from gun manufacturers, the members are just there to make it look good!
Also, the members don't get to really choose the leadership...they get to vote for people who are hand picked by a committee made up of the executives of the NRA!

(2,667 posts)There are so many guns out there that it might not be a bad idea at all for school children to be taught how dangerous they are, which would be in complete contradiction to how they are portrayed by popular media.

(20,453 posts)Instead of using gun therapy for chasing birds away from chickens, use some sustainable farming techniques where the birds are protected in roaming coops, which in turn, fertilizes the land, and an introduction of animals working in a symbiotic manner, so you don't have to shoot them?
Or, maybe this should be a poster for the Darwin Awards.... What kind of procreating mental midget does this? burp.... fart...
15 yo students, who has many years of hunting and shooting under his belt already, shot himself in the thigh this summer while cleaning one of his guns, narrowly missing a self-gelding.
His family doesn't seem concerned, nor does he. No charges were filed against the parents, but that's not a surprise. Guns and kids are a normal part of the local culture.

(6,828 posts)dad just happened to like rifles. He also liked German marches.
However
He was a real hardass about gun safety. I had no interest in guns, they frightened me as my dad generally frightened me, but he really did drill gun safety into my head - safety switch, point the gun at the ground at all times, etc. I was six and I really got it. One of the main things was to never ever ever point the gun at a person.
We did not gun together much, so I may have gotten stupid if we gunned on a weekly basis. He did take me shooting, but that was very rare.

The birds attacking the chickens can wait until you get the gun out of the locked safe.

(13,081 posts)Or assault w/ a deadly weapon, or any of several other serious charges. The legal theory being that whatever a child seven or younger does is the same as the action of the person watching them. So, for instance, if your five year old steals a candy bar from the store while you're paying for your gas, you could be charged with shoplifting.

(57,936 posts)How about the school bus then?
We have laws that prohibit the very young from driving cars because we know that children and early adolescents do not have the maturity to make the decisions that drivers have to make.
We should have similar laws about the handling of guns. Children do not have the maturity, the understanding, to handle a gun or a car. It's just a developmental fact.
Allowing a child under the age of 16 to handle or have a gun is child endangerment pure and simple. It should be illegal.

(30,099 posts)who believes he knows better than child developmental experts who would tell him a 3 yr old
should never be trained to fire a gun. That even though that 3 yr old now has years of experience,
he still does not have the capacity to understand the ramifications at the ripe old age of 6.
We would never want such a precaution in place reflected in a law, nope. Instead, we'll
appreciate that the little girl survived and all's well that ends well.

(4,373 posts)for their children's deaths. If this would have been a day care situation or a plain old babysitter, on the other hand, charges would have been forthcoming. There is a culture that insists that any parent who is responsible for the accidental death of one of their own children shouldn't be charged because they will have to live with that grief for the rest of their lives; however, apparently non-parents just don't feel all that bad.

(8,646 posts)Not only did the sister lose her life, but now the boy will have serious issues for the rest of his life. I've met parents like this - they think he's old enough to handle a gun because they 'taught' him, they will also think that him shooting his sister is HIS fault, and they will probably never let him forget it. Neighbors of ours let their 7 year old drive a snowmobile around (in town, where it was against the law no less) when my kids were playing outside. I heard the sound but rushed outside too late, the 7 year old boy ran over my 8 year old daughter. Thankfully, there was about 2 feet of fresh, soft snow and my daughter just sank (sunk?) into it as the vehicle went over her legs, and she was fine. I gathered up my kids and took them inside and read them the riot act about being around kids driving ATVs or snowmobiles.
An hour later, the dad knocks on my door with his little boy, and starts yelling at his kid in front of me telling him to apologize and then instead of apologizing for letting his kid drive around, he said he was sorry that his kid 'was being a little asshole' and that his kid 'should've known better'. WTF? He's SEVEN. He shouldn't BE DRIVING. How fucking dumb are some people?
If something had happened to my daughter, I can guarantee that dad would've been blaming his kid for it. Parents like this piss me off to no end. Some people have NO idea what is developmentally appropriate for their kids. I consider it abuse. I have memories of my parents yelling at me or hitting me for things I would've had NO idea about at those ages. I even remember thinking, as I was being hit, "I don't know what I did!" Now that I have kids, I'm like WTF is WRONG with people like this?
I really feel for that little boy, he's going to be so messed up

(1,741 posts)That's something I've heard repeatedly. Children need to be introduced to guns and taught to shoot so that they understand the true power of a firearm. This will make them less likely to play with firearms or be involved in shooting accidents.
Didn't work so well in this case.
