One of the great engineering and salvage feats in history. Of course, they ain't done yet!
Next is to assemble the sponsons on the starboard side, float her and tow her away.

(55,445 posts)a coworker of mine mentioned in an email to her parents that a noise coming from her dashboard was driving her nuts. Her engineer dad replied with an 11 paragraph detailed explanation of possible causes.....her mum replied, "Turn up the radio".

Give an engineer a lever and he'll move the world.

(24,362 posts)I LOVE time-lapse photography.
I've done a couple myself with my iPad and an app I got for it. I put one up several months ago;

Those are pretty surreal pictures: one side looks ready to go, and the other side not so much...

(24,362 posts)I didn't read they blew her horn, but I read the other vessels involved all let go.
But getting hers to sound would be a fairly simple task. All you need is an air compressor, albeit a big one!

(111,174 posts)but people on the salvage crew described the ship as looking like someone had kicked a giant soccer ball into her side.
I'll bet everybody on shore is relieved not to have to stare at that reminder of the human capacity for idiocy every day.
They will be attaching flotation containers onto the wrecked side to get her off the rocks so they can tow her off to dry dock to be repaired or recycled.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,362 posts)From what I understand, they are going to duplicate on the starboard side what they have already attached to the port side.
These;
The contract to build them was awarded to Fincantieri, the same parent firm that built the new Queen Mary.
Utterly fascinating.
Doubtful she will be repaired. I've read several articles that state she will be scrapped.

(111,174 posts)which was the weight used to pull the ship upright.
If they're tight enough, they can be used as flotation devices, too.
The article I read said the containers on the port side were welded into place, but the ones on the starboard side won't have to be attached that securely. They could be ready to float her off the rocks in a week.

They are, and are also referred to as Cassions.
Fill them with water, they sink.
Pump the water out and they float like a cork.
Warpy
(111,174 posts)of what was going on. Somehow I couldn't see them cracking all the welds on the port side to change containers.
However, it was the source of the soccer ball comment.
