(9,761 posts)A bout of Transverse Myelitis a few years back the Army resident doc misdiagnosed as Guillain Barre Syndrome. So I didn't get the appropriate therapy of steroids and now have an area of my spine four vertebrae long on both sides with damage to the axonal parts as well as the myelin and I am semi disabled at this point.
Because I am physically unable to exercise in a way that promotes heart fitness, I would guess we are more prone to heart disease too, maybe. Don't really know, it's just what I read on MS in Wikipedia.

In fact, she has low blood pressure because of some of her meds and was actually told to eat more salt by her doctor! So, I GUESS (I am not a doctor) that is not something to be too worried about.
The thing that worries me the most is her diaphragm. Its pretty weak and she can not exhale very well. It results in her not being able to yell or talk very loud.

(32,139 posts)All I am saying is that people should be aware of what they are doing when they participate in threads like this.
DU already had an episode in which detailed personal profiles of DUers were posted here by someone who had merely watched the board for awhile. And that was just someone doing it on a lark. In 2013, identifying information has value, and every thread like this builds profiles of DU users. Data mining is big business, and not especially reputable.
Threads seeking personal information...about age, family structure, where people have lived, where people went to college, what jobs they have....are constant here. People continue to treat DU as though it were a little private board where we are all one big, happy family.
It's really not.

(32,139 posts)there's a sense of helplessness involved...and that resignation is certainly encouraged all around us. I just read an article about a school district where students are told from Day One that their postings on social media will be monitored by the school.
But I also think a lot of people just don't think about it or make the connection. It's much more comforting to believe that your favorite website is merely a safe, protected gathering place among friends.

(13,133 posts)It's probably worse than we know but if you or i have to live the rest of our lives being miserable about it then they have already won.
The marriage between government and well to do has been with us since government was invented. Yea we know they will also do just about anything to make a buck, yea i am being marketed to and yea they are trying to figure out a way to get every red cent out of me they can (and indenture me as well) or take any and all options away from as many as possible. So i should just shut up and be miserable and disconnected.
No, most of things i heard of them doing i had bad assumptions they were already doing them decades ago. It's not a surprise, it's just a wondering why they were so slow about trying to implement them. You give them your own personal power when you fear them in a irrational way (which they prey upon)
BainsBane

(14,061 posts)The lengths they go to in order to find personal information is beyond pathological.
It's easy to forget that DU is not as insulated as the atmosphere here may make it seem. I especially cringe when people share extremely personal, highly charged details about their lives. It can become cruel fodder for FAR too many people. It hurts -- physically hurts -- to see them objects of ridicule.

I agree with "WOO" ...we need to be careful because those of us who aren't "Star DU'ers' anymore can be targeted for ads put out that appeal to our Age which really isn't anyone's business in these times when we know NSA is spying and giving it over to anyone who will "Pay to Play" to fund them.
