"Anglo American's withdrawal and the uncertainty over the project brings a temporary pause to what had been expected to be a long and bitter fight between mining companies and their opponents.
The Pebble mine was seen as one of the most important environmental decisions on Barack Obama's second term agenda even though it was overshadowed at times by the controversy over the Keystone XL pipeline."
Here is somethings you should know about Pebble Mine:
*Located in the pristine part of southern Alaska
*Possibly largest find of copper and gold in the world
*Water table located close to surface
*Lots of the copper and gold is located deep underground which would require underground blasting, which would cause subsidence of the overlaying land as the man made caverns would collapse on itself.
*Debris pulled out of these caverns is treated with a solution to extract the gold and the remainder was to be dumped in a nearby river which would have created a large dam like structure
*Contamination threat very high from the mine operation as the pumps used to lower the water table would be halted by the mining company once the mine became unprofitable. Water table would rise and come in contact with contaminated debris and enter the hydrological cycle in that area.
Big, big victory and lets hope we can stop the Keystone Pipeline!
