http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/09/virginia-republican-not-going-for-jewish-vote.htmlJohn Whitbeck, 10th District Republican Committee chairman, kicked off the festivities by telling a joke about how the head of the Jewish religion presented the pope with a long, elaborate document that the Jewish leader said was a bill for the last supper.
It's a great piece of humor because it combines the Jews-are-cheap angle with the Jews-killed-Jesus angle in one joke.
Eric Cantor could not be reached for comment.

(16,844 posts)They're digging that hole down to irrelevance that much deeper. Sooner or later, in order to become a Republican, you're going to have to publicly accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior and get baptized on tv. I'm loving it.

Behind the Aegis
(53,944 posts)It is one of the reasons they consider us traitors, as opposed to the other side. Virginia doesn't have a huge percentage of Jews (about 1.2%). But I was surprised to see the recent stats showing that almost 100,000 Jews live there.

(16,844 posts)I've been told that a lot of Jewish people live in Maryland.
Behind the Aegis
(53,944 posts)I just checked the 2012 stats for Maryland, and they are a little more than twice the number of Virginia. Of course, I know many that work in the DC area are choosing to live in Virginia now, as opposed to Maryland, but I can't remember why that is. Here is the place I am pulling stats from: http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/US-Israel/usjewpop.html

(20,885 posts)Just saying "the head of the Jewish religion" should make Jews laugh. I speak as a bona fide Jewish atheist.
I don't think Cuccinelli needs to worry about losing Jewish votes. Yeah there might be a few, but there is nothing he could do to lose those.

(20,885 posts)and maybe it's only funny if a Jew tells it. (Jackie Mason?) (No! Ooh! Gilbert Gottfried!)
But let's also take into consideration that there are some things that comedians can do, that politicians can't get away with. And the costs of "losing a gig" are not comparable.
