The GOP Is Threatening Murder-Suicide With New Shutdown Warnings
by Kirsten Powers Sep 19, 2013 5:45 AM EDT
If the president refuses to defund Obamacare, House Republicans are happy to retaliate with a government shutdown. What theyre really headed for is complete ruination, says Kirsten Powers.
The Republican Party is destroying America.
Harsh words, yes. But inescapably true. Its a bit of a murder-suicide. House Republicans willingness to lay waste to the country to satisfy their fringiest faction will ultimately guarantee the GOP irrelevancy as a national party, unless they change their ways. In the meantime, they seem determined to take us all down with them.
There isnt even a feint toward decency. In what has become a recurring nightmare, House Republicans are using budget negotiations to play chicken with the stability of the American economy. This time, they want President Obama to agree to defund his signature achievement, the Affordable Care Act. If he refuses to strangle his own baby in the crib, Republicans are happy to retaliate. Theyll shut down the government. These are not people with whom one can work.

Said Ornstein: The bizarreness of this monomaniacal focus on Obamacare, given that it is fundamentally a Republican program from the 1990s mixed in with Romneycare, says it all. Obamacare relies on the private sector; there is no public option. That you are willing to bring the country to its knees to sabotage it just shows this is a party that has gone off the rails.
Just how damaging have the congressional Republicans been to the country? If you look at what could have happened in a reasonable political system, with give and take we would have been on a more robust path to growth, said Ornstein. Weve gone from one credit agency downgrading us to a far greater likelihood that we will default. If sequester continues it is a cancer eating away at national parks, food safety, basic research its a terrible situation. No matter how much {Republicans} talk about how it was Obamas idea the whole idea was to create such awful consequences that no sane person would accept it. But these arent sane people.

(28,017 posts)In Illinois, we had a GOPer named John Anderson. He began as one of the most conservative GOPers in congress. But by his third term as congresscritter, he evolved into a social liberal. Despite this transformation, he held a great deal of support and respect from both sides of the aisle.
He ran for president in 1980, but lost to some conservative creep named ronald. Before his death, he endorsed Barack Obama for president.
If more senators were like Anderson instead of like Kyl or Cruz, we'd have a much healthier nation.

(56,828 posts)I ran into him several years ago - I was on a rental car shuttle bus going either to or from an airport. Somebody in the back asked him, "Are you John Anderson?" and it was him. Seemed like a nice guy for the few minutes we were in the shuttle together.
He's also the only vote for president my father ever made that wasn't for a Democrat - he never trusted Republicans, but disliked Carter and his religiousness and because he wasn't a great leader. (I think Anderson ended up with over 6% of the national vote?)
Got that right!

(25,111 posts)that GOPers are effing with polling stations as well. In an Dem areas there may not be or the station may be too far for many voters to get there. Its been proven that voters will wait in long lines so the GOPers need to discourage the voters by making it harder in the GOP run states.
One proposed location that I read about was in the south - "whites" only country club.

(22,308 posts)They made a fatal mistake, and some of them know it.
To get W elected, Rove and his gang rejected expanding into the middle to try and get votes and instead dug deeply into the right wing and brought out voters who usually did not vote. Now they are stuck. They can't play back to the middle because they will lose the far right voters who they need.
Combine this horribly short sighted strategy with the demographic shift which is creating an advantage for Democrats and the Republican party is in real trouble.
They see it coming and many have decided to just do as much damage as possible while they can. I suppose they think it will shorten the amount of time that they are out of power if things are really bad for a while. I don't think it will work because the Democratic party is plenty conservative enough for a lot of voters. Once the Republican party is no longer able to compete on a national level the Democrats will split. We will end up with a new liberal party that is actually liberal and a party of conservative Democrats who are at least capable of grasping reality (unlike the current conservative party). The Republicans will hang on in some states for a while, but eventually any young conservative politician who has national aspirations will be forced to join the Democratic party, and that will be the final nail for the (R)s.
At least that is how I see things unfolding. I feel very comfortable making these predictions because 1) none of you know who I am and 2) at my age I may not live long enough to be proved wrong.
Have a nice day.

(40,366 posts)what lies in the twisted darkness of their minds? What kind of pleasure do they derive from destroying the economy, people, and the planet? It seems to go beyond simple greed. What do you call taking food from children or denying people Medicare? It's like they crawled right out from the bowels of hell to cause pain and destruction. Here in NC, they are quite busy.

(9,688 posts)By triangulating off the R's, the D's make the R's a guiding light -- however fucked up that is. Oh yes, it's fucked up....
The D's ought to have total control of message at this moment, yet time after time I hear arguments which include the refrain "but then the R's will say....", as if what the R's have to say is relevant to anything pertinent, and as if that's an excuse for having failed to provide the D's with a leading voice.

(56,828 posts)"I'm not a member of any organized political party, I'm a Democrat."? That's from Will Rogers back in the early to mid 1930s. Still applies today.
Republicans tend to obediently follow authority, which is why they stay so coordinated once they get their talking points from Limbaugh each day.
Democrats tend to go against authority, and therefore are not nearly as good at following along with messaging. And, even if they do go along with authority, they often do so grudgingly.

(18 posts)It's now clear what the Republicans have devolved into: a fringe group devoted to bringing down America at all costs. They keep saying that they're shutting down the government to stop so-called Obamacare but the reality is(at least the way I see it) is that they've been determined on this course since Obama was reelected. It's now become clear to them that the demographics and future trends in America are not going their way and that their dream of an unending white and right-wing supremacy is coming to an end. To forestall that, they are doing their level best to de-stabilize a government that they will no longer control, before they become irrelevant.

(8,200 posts)Just how much longer can we suffer these evil bastards. Just how much longer are we going tolerate the propaganda that spews from their bought and paid for so-called talk radio and TV hosts. It seems to me that far too many Democrats, especially our supposed elected representatives, are little more than chicken-shits, who refuse to actually confront these rabid extremists.
I anxiously await for my representatives to call them exactly what the are: Fascist Racists. The Republicans Party is totally controlled by dangerous demagogues who spew the poisonous lies hourly over the airwaves. Go to any Republican site on the internet and you will find it is dominated by homophobic racists dripping with hatred. To date what I see is that it is a rarity that they are ever challenged.

(2 posts)I post the following -- and variations thereof -- on Twitter, a number of times a week. If we don't get this message out and percolating through the voting public by Election Day 2014, the U.S. and the world are in deep shit.
@scribe12248: The @GOP is the deadly enemy of peace, freedom, justice and human rights everywhere. The world won't be safe until its utter destruction.
@scribe12248: There's a word for plotting to destroy your own country for ideology's sake: Treason. Today's @GOP is the party of traitors. #DefundTheGop
