"What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,' but does not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead."
James 2:14-17 (NAB)

(40,656 posts)righteous and good. Just like his brother. Google what Jesus had to say about prisons, the poor and not helping. Thank you for the verses. I am glad to read them again.

(13,485 posts)People need to show what they are made of and do what they know is righteous. Humans can care for each other instead of bombing and killing... and in the case of congress... starving.
Now we have...
the "Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act"
I hope those who voted for this rot in the hell of their own shame and stupidity.

35 For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in;
36 naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.
37 Then the righteous will answer Him, Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink?
38 And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You?
39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?
40 The King will answer and say to them, Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me. "

(1,135 posts)I've worked in soup kitchens for many years. When a worker would say that they felt someone didn't deserve to come and get free things, when they had plenty already themselves, I'd quote that verse. I'd tell them forget who they are and think that you're doing for Jesus, because you are. And that is all that matters.

(81,212 posts)They're the ones most forgotten by the GOP. As a matter of policy, and certainly on "principle".
And they're the same ones who are likely the loudest boasters about how much they love Jesus.

(28,270 posts)They claim to a man and woman I bet to be Christians, followers of Jesus. But their vicious actions towards the poor, of taking the food out of the mouths of hungry American kids says otherwise!
Teabag republicans are wolves in sheep's clothing. They are stone liars. In reality they worship mammon and they truly do the works of satan!
We spend billions to stop al quida terrorists when the radical terrorist group doing the most damage to all Americans is allowed to destroy with abandon, the damned republican party!
The teabag rethugs and al quidas agenda are one and the same!

(40,416 posts)It's a practice that goes back, undoubtedly, to the earliest of recorded history. The mythos of the previous ages gave rise to the mythos of the current time. Of course, all these people had was a sense of tradition and that served them well, in a way. They all used the sock puppet of the previous age to justify what they wanted to do now.
But humans have risen above those Bronze and Iron Age stories.
Unfortunately, there are those who would use those same sock puppets to prop up their Bronze Age mythologies. And almost 2/3rds of the USA thinks that God created the universe, and life here on Earth.

(2,012 posts)Yesterday during the food stamp "debate" one of the Repubs said, "See that picture up there, that's Moses, he's the only one facing forward. He's telling us that work is holy." Then he went on about how we only need to read the Bible, that Adam was put out of Eden because he wouldn't work. I never did make the connection between Moses' picture and the garden of Eden. But the ranking member of the committee (she was great) said quietly. "Yes we need to read the Bible; taking care of the poor is mentioned over 200 times."
