Transgender Teen Selected Homecoming Queen (Huntington Beach, CA)

(xpost from LBN.)

Posted by Mirna Alfonso (Editor) , September 20, 2013 at 09:27 PM

Marina High School transgender senior Cassidy Lynn Campbell was selected as homecoming queen in voting announced at halftime of tonight's football game at Westminster High School.

Balloting began with write-in votes a couple of weeks ago which determined the 10 candidates for a second round of voting. In the second round, students filled out their preferences confidentially on a scan-tron sheet, which was tabulated by a machine.

She told The Times she was "doing this for the kids who can't be themselves."

"With all the attention, I realized it's bigger than me," Cassidy told The Times.

A lot of my friends went to Marina (a long time ago), and I guess they were our rival high school to some extent. Nice to see good news from the OC...

My son is Autistic(functional). I feared for a long time about how he was being treated at school. He always told me everything was fine but you know kids, I assumed he had to be having trouble of some kind. When he was a Freshman in High School I went to the Homecoming rally, where he was nominated as Homecoming Prince for his class. When they called his name and he stood up the entire school was chanting his name. I was doing my best to hide the tears of joy...

He has been "Prince" every year and now that he is a senior is is Homecoming and Prom King.

I have no fear that the next generation will do better than we did. We need to leave them something to work with.

Like it should be.

30 years ago, Cassidy would have been expelled from school for manifesting as the young woman who she is. But today she is the Homecoming Queen of her school.

How cool is that?
