The stipend is because they have to pay something.

Mother Jones is as full of shit as any media source.

They're an intern, who for all you know works four hours a day a few days a week.

Like I did, and got paid nothing (and not much was expected of me) at one of Boston's top radio stations twenty years ago.

with real benefits. These internships, (minimally) paid or not, are really a way of not having to have a staff position.

I'm surprised at Mother Jones, too. Look, this is being billed as some kind of wonderful learning opportunity ... when what it really is is a grunt internship in selling advertising. Why should they pay someone a real salary to make cold calls to advertisers when they have a constant stream of college students willing to work for a brief time and put it on their resumes after they move on.

Most internships I've seen have been unpaid. Looks like a good deal to me.

What they do get you is personal contacts that are very valuable when it is time to find a job and experience working in an industry.

I should also add that Mother Jones is a non-profit organization, rather than a for profit corporation. Check out the link to unpaid internships below. A $1000.00 stipend for a Summer internship that fills a requirement for a degree that would otherwise charge you out the ying yang for class is incredible.

(b) the requirements for the job in no way resemble an "intern":

Responsibilities
• Complete research projects for advertising sales representatives
• Research and synthesize industry trends
• Work with production director to ensure accuracy and quality of print advertisements
• Compile and analyze advertising performance data
• Update records in Salesforce
• Process and organize insertion orders and contracts
• Maintain and update a variety of spreadsheets and Google documents
• Create and send advertising performance reports to clients and ad sales representatives
• Summarize content on Mother Jones and distribute to advertising department
• Conduct competitive analysis

Required Skills
• Proven ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
• Strong analytical abilities
• Organizational, communication, and office skills
• Exceptional work ethic: ability to manage workload and complete tasks efficiently and accurately.
• Software skills: proficiency Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Google Docs is essential. Experience with Google Analytics is a plus.

Desired Skills
• Experience with Salesforce or other CRMs
• Proficiency in HTML and CSS
• Experience with database administration
• Previous experience in the publishing industry
• Sense of humor

Face it - they want a $35K plus benefits person for $12K and no benefits.

Nonprofit doesn't mean they don't seek profits. It means they account for them so they're zero.

By that job description they want a full time worker who creates value for the organization. They are paying less than the minimum wage.

Ours are unpaid, but we work with their schools to give them academic credit for their internship if they desire it (some schools have a laundry list of paperwork that I fill out for them).

Our internships are on a revolving basis and not all of them are summer ones (most of our interns started after the academic year began). They work on average 15 hours a week.

and these days $1000 monthly stipend is more than many "internships" pay.
What the ad doesn't do is limit the maximum term as an intern therefore this is a job.
